Surat | Gujarat —  As Ganesh Chaturthi festivities light up every corner of India, one Ganesha idol in Gujarat is stealing the spotlight with grandeur and devotion. Nestled in Daliya Sheri, Mahidharpura – the heart of Surat diamond hub – the iconic “Richest Ganesha of Gujarat” has once again left devotees spellbound. Adorned with over 25 kg of gold and silver ornaments, studded with real and American diamonds worth lakhs, the idol has become the epicenter of attraction for lakhs of visitors.

This year, the idol has been further enriched with a 6-foot, 1 kg gold-and-silver necklace and a leaf-shaped silver backdrop encrusted with one lakh American diamonds, along with a 7 kg silver Mushakraj (mouse king), making the pandal shine brighter than ever.

“Faith as priceless as diamonds”

The devotees believe this Ganesha is not just about wealth, but faith. Organizer Hardik Patel, who has been leading the celebration, said, “Since 1972, Mahidharpura’s Ganesha has been celebrated with immense devotion. Every ornament here has been donated by devotees over the years. People’s faith is the real treasure, far greater than gold or diamonds.”

Adding to this sentiment, Sejal Shah, a local resident, said, “Every year we wait eagerly for Ganeshji’s darshan. When you see him glittering with ornaments, you don’t just see wealth – you feel the devotion of thousands of people who have contributed. He truly is the pride of Surat.”

The grandeur of ornaments

The idol’s majestic decorations include:

Turban – 2 kg of gold and silver (₹5 lakh)

Hand covers – 3 kg gold and silver (₹7.5 lakh)

Side bands – 1 kg gold and silver (₹2.5 lakh)

Leg covers – 1.5 kg gold and silver (₹3.25 lakh)

Waistband – 750 gm (₹1.5 lakh)

Kadamb-Kamal (lotus) – 1.5 kg gold-silver (₹2.25 lakh)

Kuhadi (axe) – 1.5 kg gold-silver (₹2.25 lakh)

American diamonds – 1.5 lakh stones (₹2 lakh)

Mushkraj – 7 kg silver (₹6.5 lakh)

Silver trunk with gold plating – 1 kg

The total value of the ornaments crosses ₹32 lakh, though devotees insist their true worth lies in the blessings they symbolize.

Devotees from across India

Known as the “King of Surat”, this Ganesh idol attracts devotees not only from Gujarat but also from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Last year, the pandal saw nearly 5 lakh visitors, and organizers expect over 6 lakh this year.

“This Ganeshji is as famous as Surat’s diamonds,” said Rajendra Jain, a visitor from Rajasthan. “People come here not just for darshan but to feel the divinity and grandeur that you cannot find anywhere else.”

Security as grand as celebration

Given the ornaments’ immense value, the organizers have made tight security arrangements. More than 300 volunteers work round-the-clock, supported by 50+ CCTV cameras and two police vehicles on standby. Around 100 volunteers remain inside the pandal at all times, ensuring safety and smooth darshan for visitors.

To make darshan easier for those unable to travel, a mobile application offers live streaming 24/7, allowing devotees across the world to connect with the divine celebrations.

Faith, festivity, and heritage

Celebrated for 52 years, the Daliya Sheri Ganesh festival is not just a religious occasion but also a showcase of Surat’s cultural richness. The idol is housed in a palace-like pavilion with grand lighting and décor, making it one of the most visited Ganesh pandals in Gujarat.
