Gandhinagar | Gujarat — In a significant step toward enhancing cooperation in public health and drug regulation, a delegation from the US Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), part of the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA), visited the Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA) of Gujarat in Gandhinagar. The meeting was part of the long-standing “FDCA, Gujarat – USFDA Regulatory Forum,” established over 15 years ago to facilitate the exchange of technical knowledge and regulatory practices.
The US delegation, led by ONDCP Assistant Director Debbie Seguin, met with FDCA Commissioner H. G. Koshiya and senior officials to discuss pressing issues, including drug trafficking, precursor chemical tracking, illegal narcotics production, and the export of habit-forming drugs. With Gujarat holding a major share in India’s pharmaceutical exports to the US — supported by over 150 USFDA-approved manufacturers — the dialogue held strategic importance for both sides.
“By giving priority to public health, Gujarat’s food and drug regulatory system has maintained a strict watch on traffickers of illegal pharmaceutical drugs and will continue to do so,” said Commissioner Koshiya during the discussions.
The American delegation expressed deep appreciation for Gujarat’s proactive measures in combating the illegal drug trade. They reviewed detailed presentations on the FDCA’s enforcement actions, regulatory monitoring, and preventive strategies to curb the misuse of pharmaceutical drugs for narcotics production.
Joint Commitment to Curb Illegal Narcotics
During the meeting, both delegations explored ways to strengthen the National Drug Control Strategy, combat drug-related crime and violence, and reduce the use of illegal narcotics. They also discussed methods to tighten control over precursor manufacturing and to share intelligence on suspicious pharmaceutical shipments.
Debbie Seguin remarked, “Gujarat’s strong regulatory framework and enforcement record set an example in the fight against illegal narcotics. Continued collaboration between the USFDA and FDCA Gujarat will help safeguard public health on both sides of the globe.”
Long-standing Knowledge Exchange
The FDCA–USFDA collaboration has a long history of training, capacity building, and information exchange. In the past, senior USFDA officials such as Bruce Rose, Matthew Thomas, Altaf Lal, Letitia Robinson, Sarah McMullan, and Greg Smith have visited Gujarat to provide training to drug and food officers, as well as to stakeholders in the state’s healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors.
“Our commitment is to ensure quality, affordable medicines reach the world, while stopping the flow of harmful, illegal drugs,” Koshiya added.
