BJP Leads Early Trends as Gujarat Awaits Crucial Local Poll Verdict

Ahmedabad | Gujarat —- The political temperature in Gujarat soared on Tuesday as counting began for the state’s massive local self-government elections, a contest widely seen as the semi-final before the 2027 Assembly polls. Early trends suggest the BJP is heading toward another sweeping victory, even as cracks appear in select regions and rivals scramble to stay relevant.

Votes are being counted for 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats and 260 taluka panchayats. Out of 10,050 seats, 732 were already declared uncontested — a sign, analysts say, of the ruling party’s deep grassroots machinery.

A senior BJP functionary said, “The trends show the people’s continued faith in our governance model. Local elections are the backbone of our political structure.”

Political observers say the party that dominates municipalities and panchayats will gain a decisive edge in the 2027 Assembly elections.

AAP’s Historic Breakthrough in Panchayats

In a major symbolic win, the Aam Aadmi Party captured the Bagasara taluka panchayat in Amreli district — its first ever victory in a panchayat body in Gujarat. After winning 27 seats in the Surat Municipal Corporation in 2021, the party is once again fighting to keep its urban foothold alive.

An AAP leader said, “This victory proves that the alternative politics we promised is slowly taking root in Gujarat.”

However, the party faces a tough test after several leaders exited recently. The results will determine whether the remaining leadership can translate social media visibility into ground support.

Jagdish Panchal’s First Big Test

This election is the first major organisational test for BJP state president Jagdish Panchal. In 2021, under CR Patil, the BJP won nearly 90% of local body seats — a record performance that paved the way for the party’s landslide 2022 Assembly victory of 156 seats.

Political analysts warn that any dip in performance could trigger organisational reshuffles ahead of 2027.

A political analyst said, “Repeating 2021 is a tall order. Even a small drop will be closely scrutinised.”

Congress Fighting for Survival

For the Congress, the stakes could not be higher. After being reduced to just 17 Assembly seats in 2022, the party faces questions about its ground presence.

The spotlight is on Amit Chavda, who resigned as state president after the 2021 results. If Congress fails to gain respectable numbers, political experts believe AAP could replace it as the principal opposition in Gujarat.

A Congress insider admitted, “This election will decide whether we remain relevant in Gujarat politics.”

Violence Erupts at Counting Centre

Amid the tense atmosphere, violence broke out at Gandhi Engineering College after BJP candidate Dinesh Rajpurohit was declared winner in Ward 18. Celebrations quickly turned chaotic as BJP and Congress supporters clashed, leading to scuffles and physical fights outside the counting centre.

Police intervened to bring the situation under control.

A Decisive Day for Gujarat Politics

Experts believe BJP is likely to retain dominance across local bodies, Congress may see modest gains, and AAP risks losing momentum. As official results roll in through the day, the outcome will set the tone for Gujarat’s political battle leading up to 2027.
