Kandla, Gujarat – In a monumental leap for India’s renewable energy ambitions, Gujarat has commissioned the country’s first megawatt-scale Make in India green hydrogen plant at the Deendayal Port in Kandla. With this achievement, Gujarat cements its position at the forefront of the nation’s green hydrogen revolution, aligning closely with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a self-reliant and environmentally sustainable India.

In just four months after the foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Modi in Bhuj on May 26, 2025, the 1 MW module—part of a larger 10 MW project—has been commissioned. The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) now stands as the first port in India to operate such a facility, capable of producing 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

At the inauguration ceremony, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, lauded the swift execution and innovative spirit that brought the project to life. “What we’re witnessing here is speed, scale, and skill coming together. DPA has set a new benchmark not just for India, but for global ports embracing clean energy,” Sonowal declared.

The plant was inaugurated in the presence of Union Minister Shri Shantanu Thakur, Ministry Secretary T.K. Ramachandran, DPA Chairman Sushil Kumar Singh, and senior officials. The project was executed with technical expertise by Indian engineers from Larsen & Toubro (L&T), showcasing the power of indigenous capability.

“This is a proud moment for the nation. From commissioning India’s first fully electric tug to now launching a megawatt-scale hydrogen plant, DPA continues to lead by example. The hydrogen ecosystem built entirely by Indian engineers is not just future-ready but also a beacon for others to follow,” Sonowal added.

With global attention turning to carbon neutrality, green hydrogen is fast emerging as the fuel of the future. The plant will play a vital role in cutting down emissions at sea level and powering port operations with clean energy. It marks a pivotal step in India’s Green Port Initiative under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, under whose leadership the state continues to surge in renewable energy projects, has consistently supported the integration of green technologies. His administration, in line with the central government’s strategy, is actively driving green transformation in sectors from transportation to industry.

This green hydrogen plant is more than an energy solution—it’s a signal of India’s readiness to lead the world in sustainable industrial practices
