Gandhinagar, Gujarat – In a significant move aimed at easing financial burdens on middle-class families, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has announced an 80% reduction in stamp duty for housing transfers made through societies, associations, and non-trading corporations.

Under the revised provisions of the Gujarat Stamp Act, 1958, only 20% of the original duty will now be charged, along with applicable penalties, for property transfers executed via allotment letters and share certificates. This decision is expected to provide substantial relief to homebuyers and cooperative housing societies across the state.

Key Highlights of the Decision: 80% waiver on stamp duty for housing transfers by societies & associations, Only 20% duty + penalty to be paid under Section 9(a) of the Gujarat Stamp Act,  Relief aimed at middle-class families facing high property transfer costs, No additional financial burden from penalties due to revised calculations

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel emphasized the government’s pro-people approach, stating:“This decision reflects our commitment to reducing unnecessary financial pressures on middle-class families. By rationalizing stamp duty charges, we aim to make housing transfers more affordable and transparent.”

The move comes after numerous representations from citizens struggling with high transfer costs. The new policy ensures that the duty payable will match the original property registration amount, preventing excessive penalties.

This stamp duty reduction applies specifically to: Cooperative housing societies,  Non-trading corporations, and Associations transferring property via allotment letters & share certificates

The Gujarat Revenue Department will soon issue an official notification detailing the implementation of this policy.

With real estate costs rising, this 80% stamp duty cut is a major step toward affordable housing in Gujarat. It aligns with the state government’s vision of ease of living for middle-income families while boosting the cooperative housing sector.
