Before Rath Yatra, elephants undergo rigorous health scrutiny

Ahmedabad, Gujarat — While their grand decorations and majestic presence make them a highlight of the annual Rath Yatra, the 17 elephants participating in this year’s procession are far more than just a visual spectacle. Behind the scenes, a dedicated team from the Ahmedabad District Animal Husbandry Department has been meticulously monitoring their physical and mental health, ensuring both their well-being and the safety of the lakhs of devotees.

“The elephants are an integral part of our tradition, and their health is paramount,” stated Dr. Suketu Upadhyay, Deputy Animal Husbandry Director of Ahmedabad district. “We began continuous monitoring of their physical and mental health on June 23rd, well in advance of the Yatra. Every elephant underwent a thorough health check, and health certificates were issued to confirm their fitness.”

This rigorous oversight goes beyond basic checks. Dr. Upadhyay elaborated on the comprehensive care: “Our veterinary teams are vigilant, promptly addressing any irritations from insects like flies or ants. More critically, any minor or major ailment is immediately diagnosed and treated. We spare no effort to ensure these magnificent animals are in peak condition.” The pre-emptive measures aim to prevent any distress that could potentially lead to unforeseen incidents during the crowded procession.

The commitment to safety extends to the Yatra itself. Dr. Upadhyay confirmed, “Our team, along with personnel from the Forest Department, remains with the elephants for all three days of the Rath Yatra. This close vigilance is crucial to prevent any trouble for the elephants and to ensure no untoward incident occurs due to their discomfort or agitation.” In a critical safety protocol, he revealed, “Should an elephant lose its mental balance or become agitated, Forest Department personnel are equipped with dart guns to safely control the animal.”

Devotees often express their awe for the elephants. “They are so beautiful, a true blessing to witness,” said Sunita Sharma, a long-time Rath Yatra attendee. “Knowing that they are well cared for makes the experience even more meaningful. It’s reassuring that the authorities are thinking about everything.”
