Ahmedabad, Gujarat — In the wake of the devastating Air India Flight 171 crash on June 12, which claimed the lives of 275 individuals, the Tata Group and Air India have swiftly moved to provide financial relief to the bereaved families. A compensation package of ₹1 crore from the Tata Group and an additional ₹25 lakh from Air India has been announced for the families of all deceased, with efforts already underway to disburse these vital funds.

The London-bound Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787, tragically crashed in Meghaninagar, Ahmedabad, at 1:40 PM on June 12, just moments after takeoff. The catastrophic accident resulted in the loss of 241 out of 242 people on board, including 12 crew members, and an additional 30-35 individuals on the ground as the aircraft plunged into a medical college hostel. In a rare glimmer of hope amidst the tragedy, one person on board miraculously survived.

To streamline the compensation process and offer immediate support, a dedicated facilitation center has been established on the third floor of the Taj Hotel on Sindhu Bhavan Road in Ahmedabad. As of June 23, 2025, compensation has already been successfully disbursed to the families of three deceased individuals, marking a crucial step in alleviating their immediate financial burdens.

“It’s an incredibly difficult time for us, but the quick response from Air India and the Tata Group is a small comfort,” shared a visibly grieving family member at the facilitation center, who wished to remain anonymous. “The process, though emotional, feels organized, and we hope for closure soon.” Another relative remarked, “We appreciate the effort to bring us here and handle everything directly. It makes a difference when you’re dealing with so much loss.”

At the facilitation center, families are welcomed and guided through the necessary steps. Upon arrival, they provide details of the deceased and their relationship, before being ushered into a waiting room. Subsequently, they are called for a personal meeting with an officer, who meticulously verifies essential documents such as the death certificate, Aadhaar card, and DNA report. Families are promptly informed if any documents are missing to ensure a smooth process. Once all necessary paperwork is submitted, compensation cheques are typically processed and delivered within 3 to 4 days.

All affected families were contacted in advance by Air India for their in-person meetings. For the injured, Aadhaar cards and hospital admission documents are being collected to facilitate their support.

The ultimate aim of the facilitation center is to ensure that compensation reaches the families swiftly. Documents gathered from the families at the Ahmedabad center are sent to Air India’s Delhi office for verification, following which the compensation amount is directly transferred to the bank accounts of the deceased’s families.
