Gujarat Sanctions Rs.1700 Cr for Urban Growth Projects

Gandhinagar, Gujarat  – In a monumental stride towards cementing Gujarat’s status as a leader in urban planning and sustainable living, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has granted in-principle approval for development works totaling an astounding ₹1700.57 crore in a single day. This massive financial injection will energize six newly formed Municipal Corporations, five existing Municipal Corporations, and the metropolitan hubs of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, setting a robust trajectory for urban transformation across the state.

This ambitious push comes as Gujarat celebrates 2025 as the “Urban Development Year,” a continuation of a visionary journey initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2005 during his tenure as Chief Minister. Modi’s foresight in embracing urbanization as an opportunity for development laid the groundwork for Gujarat’s cities to evolve into “Well Planned Developed Cities” – a testament to integrated planning and public participation.

“The journey of urban development, which began two decades ago under the inspiration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is being vigorously advanced under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel,” stated a senior official from the Urban Development and Urban Housing Department. “This massive approval on May 27, coinciding with the launch of Urban Development Year 2025 by the Prime Minister himself, reaffirms our commitment to making Gujarat’s cities dynamic centers of economic activities.”

The approved funds, allocated under the flagship Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Urban Development Scheme, will be distributed strategically to ensure holistic growth. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation stands to receive the lion’s share with ₹546 crore, followed by Gandhinagar with ₹32 crore.

Among the burgeoning newly formed municipal corporations, the allocations are equally significant: Anand will receive ₹148 crore, Morbi ₹270.08 crore, Surendranagar ₹257.60 crore, Nadiad ₹71.91 crore, Vapi ₹251.91 crore, and Navsari ₹90.35 crore. Beyond these, smaller yet vital urban centers will also benefit, with Vadnagar Municipal Corporation approved for ₹16.37 crore, Himmatnagar ₹7.33 crore, Siddhpur ₹3.74 crore, Halvad ₹4.02 crore, and Bharuch Municipal Corporation ₹85.52 lakh.

A substantial portion of the approved budget, ₹676.28 crore, is earmarked for 247 critical infrastructure works across the six newly formed municipal corporations. These projects encompass a wide array of civic enhancements, including modern streetlights, solar facilities, comprehensive city beautification initiatives, development of public gardens, robust drainage systems, traffic circle upgrades, rainwater harvesting mechanisms, new storm water drainage lines, advanced city civic centers, and essential fire safety equipment. This comprehensive approach aims to bolster basic amenities and improve the quality of life for urban dwellers.

Under the Chief Minister’s Urban Roads Scheme, a significant ₹652.78 crore has been greenlit for extensive road renovation, resurfacing, white-topping, and repair of roads wider than 60 feet. This crucial funding will benefit the newly formed municipal corporations of Anand, Surendranagar, Vapi, and Morbi, as well as the major corporations of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, ensuring smoother connectivity and reduced traffic congestion.

Furthermore, Chief Minister Patel has sanctioned ₹191.91 crore for fundamental infrastructure works such as filter plant repair, sewerage networks, and water facilities under the Swarnim Jayanti Chief Minister Urban Development Scheme for Surendranagar, Vapi, and Anand Municipal Corporations. This ensures reliable access to clean water and efficient waste management.

In a move to enhance urban aesthetics and promote planned development, ₹31 crore has been approved for the construction of iconic roads in Anand and Surendranagar Municipal Corporations. Additionally, ₹85.52 lakh has been allocated for common plot paver block works in societies within the Bharuch Municipal Corporation area under the innovative Private Society Public Participation Scheme, fostering community engagement in urban upkeep.

Recognizing the necessity of expanding access to essential services, a total of ₹67.35 crore from the Swarnim Jayanti Chief Minister Urban Development Scheme will fund water supply works in Himmatnagar and Siddhpur Municipal Corporations, and Morbi Municipal Corporation, ensuring easy access to drinking water for newly integrated areas.

Finally, ₹64.02 crore has been approved for critical projects in outgrowth areas, including the construction of drinking water lines, underground sewers, asphalt roads, CC roads, and fire stations in Morbi, Vapi, and Halvad Municipal Corporations.

This massive investment, aimed at achieving the goal of ‘Earning Well-Living Well’ through well-planned urban development, is set to significantly strengthen Gujarat’s urban infrastructure, laying a strong foundation for future growth and enhancing the ‘Ease of Living’ for its citizens.
