Vadodara, Gujarat – Aimed at shaping the future of the Indian Gems and Jewellery industry, the Gemmological Institute of India (GII) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SIGMA University, Vadodara to offer specialized diploma and degree courses in Diamonds, Gems, and Jewellery.

The Gemmological Institute of India, a leading laboratory, Education, and Research Centre established by prominent trade bodies including Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB), Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), Gem & Jewellery Exporters Association (GJEA), Mumbai Diamond Merchants’ Association (MDMA), and Diamond Exporters Association Limited (DEAL), fosters professional excellence in gemmology through this academic collaboration with SIGMA University.

On collaboration, Mehul Shah, Chairman of GII, stated, “This partnership aims to professionally train the next generation of experts in the field, blending traditional Indian craftsmanship with structured academic learning. This collaboration is especially important for the artisans who are the lifeline of the Industry. Professional qualification will also help them enhance their social status to a great extent and will be recognized further for their craft”.

Dr. Harsh Shah, President of SIGMA University, shared his thoughts on the collaboration, stating, “At SIGMA University, we believe in empowering industry through education. This collaboration with GII reflects our commitment to equipping students with globally relevant skills while honoring India’s legacy in gems and jewellery.”

India plays a vital role in the global gems and jewellery trade, contributing 7% to the national GDP and accounting for 15% of India’s merchandise exports. With 90% of the world’s diamonds processed in India, and 15 out of every 16 diamonds polished by skilled Indian artisans, the sector continues to be a beacon of precision and excellence.

The industry thrives on unmatched artistry, with diamonds being meticulously cut with 58 facets, some as fine as the point of a needle. Degree programs such as Bachelor of Diamonds and Bachelor of Jewellery will be introduced at GII, affiliated to SIGMA University. These programs are expected to bridge the gap between traditional skill based learning and modern professionals and strengthen the ecosystem with a talent pool trained in both technical and business aspects of the trade.

Mehul Shah extended his heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Harsh Shah, President of SIGMA University, and his team for their commitment to this visionary partnership and added, “We are excited to work together in building a stronger, more educated future for the gems and jewellery industry”.
