Gandhinagar, Gujarat – Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan and a sharp crackdown on illegal immigration, the Gujarat government is tightening security protocols across the state. A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is being prepared to verify the identity of all workers, marking a sweeping change in how employers—from paan shop owners to domestic employers—engage and document their workforce.

According to highly placed sources in the Gujarat Home Department, all employers will be required to collect and submit copies of identity documents like Aadhaar, ration cards, or voter IDs of workers to the nearest police station. Failure to comply may lead to action under applicable laws.

The move comes after a disturbing revelation that hundreds of illegal immigrants, especially from Bangladesh, had been residing and working in Gujarat for years using forged documents. The crackdown reached a peak on April 26, when Ahmedabad police arrested 890 illegal Bangladeshi nationals and Surat police nabbed 134. Among those detained were individuals linked to serious criminal activities, including two suspects with alleged al-Qaeda connections.

“This SOP will cover all types of employment—from households to factories to local vendors,” a senior official in the Home Department confirmed. “This is a preventive step to detect sleeper cells and curb espionage risks.”

On Tuesday, Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi held a high-level meeting with police commissioners and district superintendents to finalize the framework of the SOP. Discussions focused on streamlining identity checks and integrating technology to store and manage worker data on a centralized digital platform.

Significantly, the responsibility for submitting valid documents will lie solely with the workers. If forged or fake IDs are submitted, employers will not be held accountable, provided they have duly filed the paperwork with the police.

Sources further confirmed that directives have already been sent to all commissionerates and district police units across Gujarat. The final SOP is expected to be released soon, with strict timelines for implementation.

The new SOP is being positioned not just as a measure to tackle illegal immigration, but also as a national security tool amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. “The links of illegal residents with hostile entities are a real concern,” a senior police official said. “Early documentation and verification can help nip anti-national activities in the bud.”

This unprecedented move will likely impact thousands of workers and employers across Gujarat and could serve as a model for other states facing similar security and immigration challenges.
