Gandhinagar, Gujarat  – Travelling on national highways in Gujarat is set to become significantly more convenient and comfortable, with the Central Government approving the development of 56 Wayside Amenities (WSAs) across the state. The move is part of a larger nationwide plan to establish 501 such facilities, aimed at modernising highway infrastructure and providing essential services to travellers.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways  Nitin Gadkari shared this update during a session of the Rajya Sabha, stating, “Our goal is to transform the driving experience in India. These Wayside Amenities will offer not just rest and refreshment, but also support for electric vehicles, medical aid, and promote local artisans.”

Of the 501 WSAs approved across the country, 94 are already operational, including nine in Gujarat. The government has set a target to scale this number to over 700 by the year 2028–29. According to officials, WSAs will be constructed at intervals of 40 to 60 kilometres on key national highways and expressways to ensure travellers have access to essential facilities throughout their journey.

Each WSA will feature well-maintained parking spaces, clean restrooms, EV charging stations, quality food courts, and basic medical services. In addition, these amenities will provide designated areas for the promotion of local crafts and produce under the concept of ‘Village Haat.’ This not only supports regional artisans and small businesses but also enriches the cultural experience for visitors.

The initiative is expected to bring a dual benefit—enhancing commuter convenience and generating employment opportunities, especially in semi-urban and rural areas. Gujarat, which has been consistently expanding its road and transport infrastructure under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel, stands to gain significantly from this development.

“Gujarat’s rapid infrastructure growth aligns well with the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for a modern, connected India. With these Wayside Amenities, we will ensure that the highways become more than just roads—they become economic corridors and points of local engagement,” said a senior official from the Gujarat Road and Building Department.

Industry experts have also welcomed the move, particularly praising the integration of EV infrastructure, which is considered crucial for the transition to sustainable mobility.
