Surat, Gujarat : In a heart-wrenching yet inspiring act of generosity, the family of 46-year-old Chamaklal Yadav, a crane operator from Bhagalpur, Bihar, made a courageous decision that gave six individuals a second chance at life. Declared brain dead at Ashutosh Multi Speciality Hospital in Surat, Chamaklal’s legacy lives on through the donation of his heart, kidneys, liver, and corneas.

A Sudden Turn of Fate

Chamaklal was working at Unant Engineering Pvt. Ltd. near L&T Company’s Defense Gate No. 3 on March 28 when he suddenly felt dizzy and collapsed. He complained of severe headaches and vomiting, prompting his immediate admission to Ashutosh Multi Speciality Hospital through a 108 ambulance.

After undergoing a CT scan, doctors diagnosed a brain hemorrhage caused by a balloon-like swelling in his brain’s blood vessel. Neurosurgeon Dr. Janil Gurnani performed an emergency procedure, placing an External Ventricular Drain (EVD) to relieve pressure in his brain. Despite the best medical efforts, his condition deteriorated.

On March 31, a team of doctors, including Intensivist Dr. Ankit Gajjar, Dr. Mayurdhwaj Bansia, and Neurosurgeon Dr. Janil Gurnani, officially declared Chamaklal brain dead.

Turning Grief into Hope

Realizing the opportunity to turn their loss into hope for others, Chamaklal’s wife, Lalita Devi, along with his nephews and community leaders, consented to donate his organs. Nilesh Mandlewala from Donate Life personally guided them through the process, ensuring they understood the profound impact of their decision.

His heart was transplanted into a 39-year-old patient in Vadodara at UN Mehta Hospital, Ahmedabad. His liver and kidneys were given to three patients at IKDRC, Ahmedabad.

A Race Against Time: Creating Green Corridors

To ensure the organs reached recipients in time, the Surat City Police created two green corridors: One to transport his heart by air from Surat to Ahmedabad, and another for his liver and kidneys by road to IKDRC, Ahmedabad.

This marks the 133rd green corridor arranged by Surat Police, demonstrating their continued commitment to saving lives through organ transplantation.

Honoring a Hero’s Legacy

Understanding the family’s grief, Donate Life arranged for Chamaklal’s mortal remains to be flown back to Bihar at no cost. His wife and children were able to bid their final farewell in their native village, Babhangama, Bhagalpur.

In a further act of kindness, Donate Life has taken responsibility for the education of Chamaklal’s three children, ensuring that his sacrifice not only saves lives but also secures the future of his family.
