Ahmedabad: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a massive victory in Gujarat’s local body elections, winning 1001 out of 1677 seats across 34 municipalities. The Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) faced a major setback, failing to make a significant impact. Meanwhile, post-election chaos erupted in Junagadh following the announcement of municipal corporation results.

Election Results Overview

The elections were held on February 16 for the Junagadh Municipal Corporation, 66 municipalities, and three taluka panchayats in Gujarat. Additionally, bypolls were conducted for three vacant seats in the municipal corporations of Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar, and Surat. The voter turnout was recorded at 57% for Junagadh Municipal Corporation and 68% for the municipalities and taluka panchayats. Notably, Chorwad Municipality recorded the highest turnout at 76%.

Violence in Junagadh and Wankaner Post Results

After the announcement of the Junagadh Municipal Corporation results, violence erupted near Chittakhana Chowk, where stone-pelting took place during the victory rally of the winning candidate from Ward No. 8. Several people were reportedly injured in the incident.

Similarly, tensions flared in Wankaner Municipality, where clashes broke out after BJP supporters celebrated their victory. A fight erupted near a shop owned by an AAP candidate, prompting police intervention to restore order.

Key Upsets and Political Developments

A major upset occurred in Junagadh, where Partha Kotecha, son of former Deputy Mayor and BJP leader Girish Kotecha, lost in Ward No. 9 to independent candidate Mahipat Singh Basia. However, shortly after his victory, Basia joined the BJP, further strengthening the party’s dominance in the region.

BJP’s Strong Performance in Taluka Panchayat Elections

BJP dominated the taluka panchayat elections across three regions:

Gandhinagar Taluka Panchayat – BJP won 20 out of 28 seats, while Congress secured only 8. This victory marks the end of the administration-led governance in Gandhinagar after two years.

Kathlal Taluka Panchayat (Kheda District) – BJP secured 15 seats, Congress won 2, while other parties won 3.

Kapadvanj Taluka Panchayat – BJP triumphed in 18 out of 26 seats, Congress won 6, and independent candidates secured 2.

The BJP’s resounding success in Gujarat’s local body elections reaffirms its stronghold in the state. The party’s strategic campaigning and governance at both the municipal and taluka levels have solidified its voter base. Meanwhile, opposition parties face the challenge of rebuilding their political presence after a disappointing performance.
