Surat : In light of significant financial losses to the government treasury due to rampant land scams, Darshan Naik, a prominent social activist, has urged Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel to intervene decisively. Naik’s appeal comes amidst escalating concerns over fraudulent activities involving government land in Surat city and district, implicating both land mafias and complicit officials.

The latest scandal revolves around an estimated Rs 2500 crore scam in Surat’s silent zone, where developers associated with Samruddhi Corporation allegedly manipulated property records to execute illicit transactions. This fraudulent scheme, now under CID Crime scrutiny, highlights the brazen collaboration between private entities and corrupt officials, bypassing regulatory oversight.

Naik emphasized, “These scams thrive with the active connivance of government officials, who not only enable but also facilitate such fraudulent activities, causing substantial losses to the government exchequer.”

The controversy deepens as numerous discrepancies emerge regarding land ownership and regulatory compliance in Surat’s silent zone. Questions persist over the creation of final plots without requisite deductions, contrary to legal norms governing land transactions elsewhere. Naik further pointed out the implications for future urban planning and infrastructure development, given the absence of statutory deductions required for municipal projects.

Moreover, illegal constructions on agricultural lands within the silent zone have compounded issues, resulting in losses of development charges and premiums owed to the government. Despite these serious infractions, Naik criticized the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) for its apparent inaction against violators, underscoring systemic failures in enforcing land-use regulations.

The activist also drew attention to the tragic consequences of these scams, citing instances where forged documents led to unlawful property transfers and subsequent legal battles. These incidents, including a case filed in the Gujarat High Court, underscore the urgent need for accountability and judicial scrutiny.

In response to these developments, Naik urged Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel to constitute a specialized team of revenue law experts. This team would be tasked with conducting a comprehensive investigation into the ongoing land scams, identifying culpable officials, and recommending stringent legal actions. Naik’s proposal includes suspending and prosecuting implicated officials to recover financial losses incurred by the government.

“These measures are essential to curb the escalating corruption and restore public trust in governance,” Naik asserted, underscoring the imperative for immediate intervention to safeguard public resources and uphold the rule of law.
