Gandhinagar : In a significant move to enhance Gujarat’s development, the state government’s first cabinet meeting of the year approved the formation of a new district and nine municipalities. This landmark decision aims to streamline administration and accelerate development in both rural and urban areas.

Vav-Tharad: Gujarat’s New District

Banaskantha district, one of Gujarat’s largest, will now be divided into two parts, giving rise to the new ‘Vav-Tharad’ district. The new district, with its headquarters in Tharad, will encompass eight talukas, while Banaskantha will retain six talukas, including Data and Palanpur.

This division, scheduled to take effect by 2026, has been a long-standing public demand. The creation of Vav-Tharad is expected to make local administration more efficient and accessible, paving the way for new developmental opportunities in the region. “This decision will not only ensure better governance but also provide an impetus to infrastructure and social development,” said a government spokesperson.

Nine New Municipalities for Urban Growth

In addition to the new district, the cabinet also approved the formation of nine municipalities to boost urban governance and services. The newly approved municipalities include Anand, Mehsana, Vapi, Gandhidham, Morbi, Surendranagar, Navsari, Nadiad, and Porbandar.

The creation of these municipalities is expected to improve key urban services such as healthcare, water supply, sanitation, and infrastructure. These towns will now benefit from focused administrative efforts, enabling them to meet the growing needs of their urban populations. “With this step, urban areas will see a noticeable improvement in public services, making them more livable and sustainable,” an official noted.

Development Agenda for 2026

The dual focus on rural and urban development underscores the government’s commitment to creating balanced growth. By addressing public demands and streamlining administration, the cabinet’s decisions aim to ensure that both newly urbanized and traditionally rural areas benefit equally from Gujarat’s growth.

These moves are seen as part of a broader agenda to enhance Gujarat’s governance model. With improved administrative efficiency and a renewed focus on development, the state’s new initiatives are poised to bring lasting benefits to its residents.
