Sonia Gandhi Controlled Manmohan via Ahmed Patel?

Ahmedabad : The controversy surrounding the leadership of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh continues to spark debates, even after his passing. Frequently labeled as a “weak Prime Minister” by his political opponents, Singh’s tenure as the head of the UPA government remains a topic of political and public scrutiny. Senior BJP leader L.K. Advani had once referred to him as the “weakest PM in Indian history.” Additionally, critics and some journalists have alleged that Sonia Gandhi, the then UPA chairperson, wielded the real power during Singh’s time in office, limiting his autonomy.

Recently, a statement by veteran journalist Neerja Chaudhary reignited the debate. In her claim, she alleged that Sonia Gandhi often communicated her directives to Manmohan Singh through her trusted political advisor, Ahmed Patel. According to Chaudhary, one such message reportedly instructed Singh: “Doctor Sahib, please pay attention to your administration and do not interfere in our politics.”

Mumtaz Patel’s Strong Reaction

Mumtaz Patel, daughter of the late Ahmed Patel, took exception to Chaudhary’s claim. Expressing her outrage on social media, she questioned the journalist’s credibility and motives. In a pointed tweet, Mumtaz wrote, “Please ask her if she heard Ahmed Patel say that to Dr. Manmohan Singh ji or if it’s just hearsay, aimed at perpetuating the narrative of a weak Prime Minister as per the BJP’s agenda to malign the Congress and the Gandhis.”

Mumtaz further accused Chaudhary of attempting to tarnish the image of her father, the Congress party, and the Gandhi family by playing into the opposition’s narrative. She demanded clarity on whether Chaudhary had firsthand knowledge of such conversations or if she was relying on unverified sources.

Political Legacy Under Scrutiny

The debate over Singh’s leadership is not new. Critics argue that the dual power structure within the UPA government, with Sonia Gandhi heading the National Advisory Council, undermined the Prime Minister’s authority. However, supporters of Singh highlight his contributions, including steering India through significant economic reforms and crises.

Ahmed Patel, a key strategist for the Congress party, passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving behind a legacy of loyalty and political acumen. With both Manmohan Singh and Ahmed Patel no longer alive, Mumtaz Patel’s response underscores the need for caution in attributing unverified claims.
