Meta is reportedly preparing to launch a new consumer-focused AI agent internally known as Hatch, as the company looks to turn its growing artificial intelligence investments into products that can perform tasks for users.

According to internal documents reviewed by The Information, Hatch could be introduced as early as late August or early September. Meta has reportedly explored a subscription model, with its most expensive tier potentially costing up to $199.99 per month and offering higher usage limits.

What is Meta Hatch?

Early versions of Hatch have reportedly been trained to interact with services such as DoorDash, Etsy, Reddit, Yelp and Outlook. The goal appears to be creating a central platform where users can access different AI-powered tools and allow agents to perform tasks on their behalf.

The reported interface could feature a customisable dashboard containing different tools or “skills” created by AI agents. These could include capabilities such as fitness tracking, travel planning and other specialised tasks.

Meta is also reportedly working on an AI-agent platform for WhatsApp. The feature could allow users to connect with and communicate with other AI agents directly through the messaging platform. A limited rollout could reportedly begin as soon as this week.

Together, these projects suggest that Meta is moving beyond traditional chatbot experiences and focusing on AI systems capable of interacting with external services and completing multi-step tasks.

Meta’s next AI model, Watermelon

Meta is reportedly targeting October for the release of another AI model internally known as Watermelon. It remains unclear whether Watermelon will become part of Meta’s Muse family or launch as a separate model.

The company has accelerated its AI development in recent months. Meta introduced Muse Spark in April as its first model developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs, followed by Muse Spark 1.1 in July and Muse Spark 1.2 in August.

The company has also released Muse Code, an AI coding agent designed for software engineering tasks, while continuing to develop smaller and more openly available AI models.

Meta’s push into AI agents

Meta’s strategy increasingly appears to involve two parallel efforts: developing proprietary AI products capable of competing with leading closed AI systems while also releasing selected models more openly.

If Hatch launches as reported, it could represent an important shift toward AI agents that do more than answer questions. Instead, users could potentially ask an agent to interact with websites, applications and services and complete tasks on their behalf.

However, Meta’s reported launch timeline and product details could still change, and the company has not officially confirmed the reported Hatch plans.

The larger challenge for Meta will be turning its rapidly expanding AI models and agent technology into products that attract users and generate meaningful revenue.
