Surat : The Surat Police Department finds itself at the center of a controversy after an alleged forged transfer order, affecting 15 police constables and an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), surfaced during Diwali vacation. The incident reportedly took place when Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot was on official leave, and someone within the department allegedly forged his signature to issue the transfers on November 9.

This incident has left the department in shock and raised serious concerns about internal protocol and security. According to regulations, any internal transfers for police constables, police inspectors (PIs), and police sub-inspectors (PSIs) must be approved by the Commissioner of Police. In this case, however, the transfers were carried out in Commissioner Gehlot’s absence, leading to suspicions and internal confusion. The commissioner, upon discovering the situation, expressed his surprise at the unauthorised action.

Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot has now ordered an official inquiry into the matter. The investigation aims to identify the person or persons responsible for forging the transfer order, which included transfers to different police stations within the city. The forgery has stirred unrest among constables who are uncertain about whether the transfers will be upheld or cancelled when the commissioner returns to duty.

Reports suggest that the transfers created a sense of excitement among some constables who received postings they viewed as favourable. However, this sense of enthusiasm was quickly overshadowed by uncertainty and concerns regarding the authenticity of the order. As rumours circulate within the department, some officers and constables suspect that a clerk or another lower-ranking official might have orchestrated the forgery to influence internal transfers.

The incident has heightened the atmosphere of tension and confusion within the Surat Police Department, where competition for preferred postings is reportedly fierce. With recent administrative shuffles and personnel changes, many officers have sought desirable positions within various police stations, leading to speculation about internal influence and favouritism. Amidst the ongoing investigation, some officers are requesting that the commissioner cancel these dubious transfers, emphasising the need for proper authorization and transparency in assignment processes.

The situation has also brought attention to internal issues within the police force, including the apparent struggle for advantageous positions. This incident underscores the importance of stringent internal controls to prevent unauthorized decisions and to maintain the integrity of the department. The investigation will likely examine potential lapses in document handling and access within the department, as well as potential motives for the forgery.

As the commissioner resumes his duties, all eyes are on him to see whether he will reverse the transfer orders and take decisive action to prevent similar incidents in the future.
