Ahmedabad : Residents endured an exceptionally hot Raksha Bandhan this year, as the city recorded its highest August temperature in the last three years. On Tuesday, the maximum temperature soared to 36.1 degrees Celsius, a significant 3.5 degrees above the seasonal average, marking an intense end to the Sawan or Bhadarva month.

The heatwave gripping Ahmedabad began early Monday, with temperatures climbing steadily over the past four days, exacerbated by the ongoing monsoon season. The city’s maximum temperature has risen by 3 degrees in this short period, leaving residents struggling to cope with the sweltering conditions. Adding to the discomfort, the air humidity was recorded at 73 percent, intensifying the sense of oppressive heat.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that Ahmedabad’s temperature will hover around 35 degrees Celsius for the next four days, offering little relief to those hoping for cooler weather. Meanwhile, private weather forecasting agencies have indicated that there is no significant chance of rainfall in Ahmedabad until August 25, with only scattered showers expected during this period.

Across the state, other cities also experienced elevated temperatures on Monday. Surendranagar registered an average maximum temperature of 35.6 degrees Celsius, while Rajkot, Vadodara, Bhavnagar, and Disa all recorded 35.4 degrees Celsius. Gandhinagar and Bhuj saw temperatures reach 35 degrees Celsius, while Surat, Porbandar, and Valsad reported slightly cooler highs of 34.8, 34.4, and 34 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Despite the widespread heat, the meteorological department has issued a contrasting forecast for southern Gujarat. Heavy rainfall is expected in the regions of Dang, Tapi, Navsari, Valsad, Daman, and Dadra Nagar Haveli on Wednesday and Thursday, providing a much-needed respite for these areas.

The intense heat in Ahmedabad has raised concerns among residents, particularly due to the unusual nature of such high temperatures during the monsoon season. Typically, this period is associated with more moderate weather, but the recent spike in temperature has defied expectations, causing discomfort and health risks, especially for vulnerable groups.
