SURAT, GUJARAT : About 200 passengers traveling from Surat to Bangalore were left in a bind late Monday night after an Indigo flight was grounded due to a bird hit incident at Surat International Airport. The incident led to the immediate cancellation of the flight, causing significant disruption for passengers, especially those with urgent commitments in Bangalore.

The bird strike occurred during the flight’s landing at the Surat International airport from Goa. The impact caused enough damage to necessitate the grounding of the aircraft. Indigo Airlines promptly cancelled the flight, leaving the passengers, who were already at the boarding area, stranded and frustrated. Among them were several individuals who had critical meetings and engagements scheduled in Bangalore.

Bird hits are a recurring issue at Surat International Airport, primarily due to the large number of shrimp farms surrounding the area. These farms attract birds, increasing the risk of such incidents. Although minor bird strikes often go unreported, the frequency of these events has raised significant concerns among airport authorities and social activists. Despite numerous complaints and calls for action, the Surat district administration has yet to address the issue of illegal shrimp farms in the vicinity.

The Goa-Surat-Bangalore Indigo flight was hit by a bird upon arrival at Surat International Airport. The resulting damage required the plane to be grounded, and Indigo engineers from Delhi were dispatched to Surat to inspect the aircraft. The delay and uncertainty caused by the incident resulted in significant inconvenience for the passengers.

The cancellation of the flight led to a chaotic scene at the airport. Indigo Airlines informed passengers that they would receive refunds and offered tickets for a rescheduled flight the following morning. However, the sudden change of plans caused frustration and anger among the travelers, many of whom faced disrupted schedules.

To mitigate the impact, Indigo rescheduled the Surat to Bangalore flight for 8 am on Tuesday. Passengers were given two options: either a full refund or a seat on the rescheduled flight. Despite these efforts, the atmosphere remained tense as passengers grappled with the unexpected delay.

The ongoing issue of bird strikes at Surat International Airport highlights a pressing need for effective measures to address the root cause. The presence of shrimp farms near the airport poses a significant risk to flight safety, and until the district administration takes decisive action, such incidents are likely to continue.
