GANDHINAGAR, GUJARAT : Tuesday marks a crucial day for the voters of Gujarat as they exercise their democratic right in the third phase of polling for the General Elections of Lok Sabha 2024. With polling booths open across the state, eligible citizens are entitled to a paid leave on polling day to ensure maximum participation in the electoral process.

Under electoral guidelines, employers are mandated to grant paid leave to employees who wish to cast their vote. Any denial of leave can be reported at the helpline number 1950, reinforcing the commitment to facilitating voter participation.

A staggering total of 4.97 crore voters, comprising 2.56 crore males, 2.41 crore females, and 1,534 individuals from the third gender, are expected to cast their votes in 50,788 polling booths spread across Gujarat.

As per Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act of 1951, campaigning for the elections concluded at 6 pm on Sunday, ensuring a level playing field for all candidates. Dr. Kuldeep Arya, Additional Chief Election Officer, underscored the importance of such regulations in upholding the integrity of the electoral process. Measures will be implemented to maintain orderliness at polling stations, including the removal of non-voters, political workers, and campaigners during the voting period.

Dr. Arya also emphasized the prohibition of mobile phones within polling stations, with voting scheduled from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Polling booths have been equipped with essential amenities such as drinking water, seating arrangements, shade, and baby care centers to address challenges posed by the prevailing heat waves.

In a bid to promote voter awareness and engagement, the Election Commission organized a ‘Run for Vote’ event across all districts just before the conclusion of the campaign period on Sunday, encouraging citizens to exercise their franchise responsibly.

According to Election Commission data, Ahmedabad (East) leads with the highest number of candidates at 18, while Bardoli has the lowest with three contestants among the 25 seats up for grabs on May 7. Navsari boasts the highest number of voters, while Bharuch records the lowest, setting the stage for a diverse electoral landscape across Gujarat.

As polling day unfolds, all eyes are on Gujarat as voters actively participate in shaping the future of the nation through their ballot choices.
