Ahmedabad : The prolonged speculation surrounding the future of Rohan Gupta, the Congress party candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Gujarat, has reached a definitive conclusion. On Friday, Gupta formally tendered his resignation from the Congress Party, a decision that coincided with his withdrawal from the electoral race for the Ahmedabad East seat in the Lok Sabha elections. Citing familial obligations and his father’s health as the primary reasons for his departure, Gupta’s resignation marks a significant turn of events in the political landscape.

In his resignation letter, Gupta elucidated on the personal turmoil that led to his decision, revealing that despite his desire to contest, his father’s illness compelled him to reconsider. “My father’s illness weighed heavily on my conscience. Despite his initial reluctance for me to contest, I managed to persuade him. However, upon seeing the toll it took on his health, I made the difficult choice to prioritize my family’s well-being over my political aspirations,” Gupta stated.

Taking to social media platform X, Gupta publicly announced his resignation from the Congress Party, expressing his grievances and levelling allegations against a senior Congress leader for purported harassment directed towards him and his father, Rajkumar Gupta. The accusations of internal discord and harassment have cast a shadow over Gupta’s departure, raising questions about the state of intra-party dynamics within the Congress.

In response to Gupta’s resignation, Congress party spokesperson Manish Doshi underscored Gupta’s rise within the party ranks and his subsequent departure, attributing it to his alleged misuse of his position to undermine the party’s interests. “Rohan Gupta attained position and prestige through the Congress Party, which he unfortunately utilized to undermine the party’s integrity. His resignation on the pretext of his father’s health comes as no surprise, given his track record,” Doshi remarked.

Furthermore, Doshi shed light on Gupta’s controversial tenure within the party, suggesting that Gupta’s affiliations and actions had raised suspicions of collaboration with the ruling BJP. “There were longstanding concerns regarding Gupta’s allegiance and his propensity to divulge sensitive party information to the BJP. Consequently, he was excluded from numerous confidential discussions within the party,” Doshi added, hinting at a rupture in trust between Gupta and the Congress leadership.
