Ahmedabad : A delegation from Afghanistan arrived at Gujarat University campus on Friday, engaging in discussions with university authorities and local law enforcement officials to address concerns arising from recent incidents of violence targeting foreign students. Led by Zakia Verdi, the delegation conveyed a message of solidarity and emphasized the enduring strength of Indo-Afghan relations.

Following their meeting with the Vice-Chancellor of the university, the delegation proceeded to meet Police Commissioner GS Mallik, seeking assurances regarding the safety and well-being of Afghan students studying in Gujarat. Zakia Verdi underscored the deep-rooted ties between Afghanistan and India, expressing confidence in India’s justice system and affirming Gujarat as a second home for Afghan students.

“We have faith in India’s justice system. For the last 20-25 years, our students have been coming here to study without any problem,” stated Verdi. “We want the safety of all international students. All Indians are our brothers and sisters. We do not want to escalate this issue into a political one.”

Addressing concerns stemming from the recent attack on foreign students at Gujarat University’s A-block hostel, Verdi reassured that the delegation had interacted with students, who expressed their confidence in the safety measures taken by authorities. Verdi emphasized the importance of not sensationalizing the issue and urged for a collective effort to maintain peace and harmony.

The attack on March 16, which targeted seven foreign students offering namaz at Gujarat University A-block hostel, including an Afghani student, had sparked tensions in Gujarat, particularly among the student community. The incident, perpetrated by a mob of 20-25 individuals wearing saffron robes, had raised questions about the safety of international students studying in India.

In response to escalating concerns, a delegation from Zambia had also visited Gujarat University to assess the situation at the hostel. Additionally, student representatives from various countries had reported the incident to the United Nations through a video conference, highlighting the need for international attention and support.
