Bharuch : The Indian Navy recently bolstered its operational capabilities with the launch of its third 25T Bollard Pull (BP) tug, named “Bajrang,” at M/s Shoft Shipyard Pvt. Ltd. in Bharuch, Gujarat.  Commodore V Pravin, Additional Warship Production Superintendent (Mumbai), officiated at the launch ceremony on March 14, 2024.

This significant event marks a crucial step forward in the Government of India’s (GoI) “Make in India” initiative. The contract for the construction and delivery of three 25T BP tugs was awarded to M/s Shoft Shipyard Pvt. Ltd., a Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME), aligning with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) mission. Notably, these tugs are being built under the stringent classification rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), ensuring the highest standards of quality and safety.

The induction of the “Bajrang” and its sister tugs will significantly enhance the operational readiness of the Indian Navy. These powerful vessels will play a critical role in assisting naval ships and submarines during berthing and unberthing maneuvers, especially in confined harbor environments. Their maneuverability will be instrumental in facilitating precise turning and maneuvering, ensuring the safety of larger vessels in congested waterways.

Furthermore, the tugs boast advanced firefighting capabilities, providing crucial afloat fire assistance to ships at anchor or alongside. This significantly bolsters the Navy’s emergency response capacity, safeguarding personnel and vessels from potential fire hazards. The “Bajrang” and its counterparts will also possess limited Search and Rescue (SAR) capabilities, contributing to the Navy’s commitment to maritime safety and security.

The launch of the “Bajrang” signifies a major stride for the Indian Navy’s self-reliance efforts. By collaborating with domestic MSMEs like M/s Shoft Shipyard, the Navy is not only acquiring critical assets but also fostering the growth of the indigenous shipbuilding industry. This win-win situation strengthens the Navy’s operational prowess while propelling India’s journey towards self-sufficiency in maritime defense equipment.
