Ahmedabad: Karnavati University, a state private university dedicated to excellence in interdisciplinary learning, on Thursday organised a panel discussion on the subject ‘Women Empowerment and Gender-based violence through art activism’.

The panel comprised Ms Mahabanoo-Mody Kotwal, a noted actor-producer and a social justice advocate; RJ Devaki, actor and radio jockey; Avni Sethi, interdisciplinary practitioner, dance curator; Ms Preeti Das, director, KCEIL and standup comedian, storyteller; Rob Anderson, cultural attaché, US Consulate general, Mumbai. The panel was moderated by actor-writer-producer, Dr Kaizaad Kotwal.

Distinguished speakers from various professional spheres shared their insights and experiences, shedding light on pressing issues and advocating for positive change.

Ms Mahabanoo-Mody Kotwal emphasised upon the importance of questioning societal norms and advocating for change. She articulated the significance of art as a catalyst for social transformation, underscoring the empowerment that comes from financial independence for women.

RJ Devaki spoke emphatically about the double standards prevalent in social media and stressed on the importance of destigmatising narratives of abuse and issues faced by women. She highlighted the role of the media in breaking taboos and fostering meaningful conversations.

Ms Avni Sethi delved into the entrenched patriarchal structures that hinder women empowerment and emphasised upon the need to challenge traditional notions of power. She urged for a re-evaluation of the role of art in societal transformation, recognizing its historical significance in times of crisis.

Mr Rob Anderson emphasized the urgent need for active discourse on topics such as domestic abuse and violence against women, advocating for increased awareness and action.

Preeti Das threw light on the influence of entertainment media in perpetuating stereotypes and discussed the sensitive issue of marital rape, fostering a dialogue on challenging societal misconceptions. The discussion concluded with pertinent questions from the audience, reflecting the enthusiasm of students to contribute to the discourse on women’s empowerment and gender equality.

This collaborative effort between Karnavati University, and KCEIL underscores the commitment to fostering meaningful dialogue and driving positive change in society. Through initiatives like these, we strive to empower individuals and create a more inclusive and equitable space.
