Gujarat Gears Up for Potential US Consulate office in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad : Good news for the bustling metropolis of Ahmedabad! The city’s burgeoning economic and strategic importance has caught the eye of the United States, with the possibility of a US consulate office looming on the horizon. Consul General Mike Hankey, who attended the Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2024, dropped a tantalising hint: “The next US consulate offices we’re opening will be in Ahmedabad and Bengaluru.”

However, Hankey cautioned that the process is “lengthy and requires meticulous attention to detail.” He assured, “Washington is closely involved in the proceedings,” adding that a “bright future” awaits Gujarat and the US, fueled by strong business ties and the state’s commitment to ease of doing business.

Gujarat’s dynamic nature and investor-friendly environment have made it a magnet for American companies, who see immense potential in sectors like solar, semiconductors, education, and healthcare. Hankey emphasized, “US companies are aware of this opportunity and are eager to invest,” highlighting the potential for job creation and technology transfer.

Hankey, who assumed his Mumbai post in August 2022, brings extensive experience to the table. His prior roles include Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Amman and heading the Palestinian Affairs Unit at the US Embassy in Jerusalem. His background in fostering commercial and security ties, particularly in the Saudi oil industry, makes him well-positioned to navigate the intricacies of India-US relations.
