Surat : A major tragedy was averted on Tuesday afternoon when the Saurashtra Janta Express, en route from Mumbai to Ahmedabad, narrowly escaped derailment after unscrupulous elements attempted to overturn the train near Surat railway station. The quick thinking of the train’s motorman, who spotted a large iron pipe placed on the tracks, saved the day, potentially preventing numerous casualties.
The motorman immediately alerted the train driver and other railway staff, who brought the train to a halt just meters before it could hit the obstruction. The pipe was recovered by railway police, who confirmed it was large enough to derail the train at its high speed.
“This is a clear case of attempted sabotage,” stated a senior railway police officer, requesting anonymity. “We are investigating the matter seriously and have already registered a complaint against unknown persons.”
The incident has sent shockwaves through the city, raising concerns about the safety of railway travel. “We are thankful for the alertness of the railway staff,” said a passenger onboard the train. “It is horrifying to think what could have happened if they hadn’t noticed the pipe in time.”
Railway authorities have assured passengers of increased security measures on the tracks and trains. “We are taking this incident very seriously and are deploying additional personnel and sniffer dogs to patrol the tracks,” said a railway spokesperson. “We are also reviewing our safety protocols to ensure such incidents do not occur again.”
