Surat: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to announce the long-awaited international status for Surat Airport during his upcoming visit to the diamond city on December 17th. The Union Cabinet chaired by PM Modi has approved the proposal to declare Surat airport as an International airport. This news comes amidst the inauguration of the airport’s extended terminal and other infrastructure projects.

The announcement follows months of speculation and anticipation from frequent fliers in Surat. Sources close to the development confirmed that the Prime Minister’s Office has directed the Ministry of Civil Aviation to prioritize international air connectivity for Surat. This includes Air India Express’s recent announcement of a daily Surat-Dubai flight, which is seen as a stepping stone towards the airport’s international transformation.

Surat airport will not only become a gateway for international travellers but also facilitate seamless export-import operations for the thriving diamond and textile industries. This strategic move promises to unlock unprecedented economic potential, making Surat a key player in the international aviation landscape and fostering a new era of prosperity of the region.

With the surge in the international passenger traffic and cargo operations, the airport’s international designation will provide a crucial impetus for regional development.

The expansion of the Surat Airport terminal building, which began in March 2020 and cost Rs 352 crore, is now complete. The extended terminal boasts a total area of 25,520 square meters and can handle up to 1,800 passengers during peak hours. This includes 1,200 domestic and 600 international passengers, with corresponding facilities like 20 check-in counters, 26 immigration counters, 5 aerobridges, baggage conveyors, and parking space for over 500 cars.

Further development plans for Surat Airport include an extension of the apron to accommodate 10 additional Code C aircraft and a full-length parallel taxiway.

Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has also instructed airlines to increase international flights from Surat and has requested a 6-month plan for further improving its connectivity.

As a result of these initiatives, Air India Express will soon operate two international flights: Surat to Sharjah and Surat to Dubai. The Surat-Sharjah route is already running successfully with an impressive 85% passenger load. Additionally, sources suggest that direct flights from Surat to Bangkok and Hong Kong are expected to begin in February 2024.

The announcement of Surat Airport’s international status marks a significant milestone for the city, promising enhanced accessibility and economic growth.
