Surat :  The long-anticipated dream of direct air connectivity between Surat and the pristine Union Territory of Diu is about to become a reality.

IndiGo Airlines has officially opened bookings for flights between Surat and Diu, with services set to commence from October 29. This exciting development promises to bring convenience and efficiency to travelers in Surat, offering quick access to the picturesque destination of Diu.

IndiGo Airlines is introducing these direct flights as part of the UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, focusing on promoting regional air connectivity across India. The winter schedule will see the launch of flights connecting Surat and Diu, with a layover in Ahmedabad. These flights are expected to operate on all days of the week except for Wednesdays, owing to the temporary runway closure at Ahmedabad airport. The flight duration between Surat and Diu is estimated to be approximately 45 minutes.

This development is a significant relief for residents and travelers in Surat who have long yearned for a quicker and more convenient route to Diu. Until now, the primary travel options from Surat to Diu included lengthy road journeys lasting around 13 hours or train journeys of about 10 hours. The new direct flights are poised to transform the travel experience, offering time and cost savings.

Diu, known for its pristine beaches and other attractions, is a popular tourist destination. The introduction of direct flights from Surat is expected to provide a significant boost to tourism in the region. Both tourists and business travelers will benefit from these flights, enabling them to explore Diu’s beauty and economic opportunities with ease.

The initiative to establish this air connectivity was achieved through collaborative efforts between the We Work for Working Airport at Surat (WWWAS) and IndiGo Airlines. WWWAS had maintained constant communication with top authorities at IndiGo, advocating for the direct air link between Surat and Diu under the UDAN scheme. The Government of India had earlier sanctioned the Surat-Ahmedabad-Diu route to IndiGo Airlines as part of its commitment to expanding regional connectivity.

The UDAN scheme, an ambitious government initiative, has successfully connected remote and underserved airports across India, bridging gaps in regional accessibility.

The launch of direct flights from Surat to Diu is anticipated to significantly enhance tourism and trade prospects in the region. It is expected to draw more tourists from Surat and other parts of Gujarat to explore the cultural and natural treasures of Diu, making it a win-win proposition for travelers and the local economy alike.
