Surat : The Kiev regime in Ukraine has taken a controversial step by designating Shree Ram Krishna Exports (SRK), a major Indian diamond exporter, as an ‘International War Sponsor.’ The move comes amid allegations of SRK engaging in commercial dealings with Russia, specifically in the import of rough diamonds mined by the state-owned Russian company, Alrosa.

While the situation has raised eyebrows in diplomatic circles, some industry experts suspect that this may be part of a larger ploy to tarnish the reputation of the Indian diamond industry in the United States, just ahead of the crucial Christmas sales season set to begin in November 2023.

The backdrop to this development is the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, with the United States providing substantial support to Ukraine in its fight against Russian invaders.

The global diamond industry is facing a daunting challenge as it navigates through a recession triggered by a confluence of factors. Chief among them is the plummeting demand for polished diamonds coupled with the relentless surge in the prices of rough diamonds on the international market. This crisis has prompted many diamond companies, particularly smaller units, to adopt cost-cutting measures, including reducing their operational days to five days a week in an attempt to combat overproduction.

The recession’s root cause lies in the significant shift in consumer preferences and economic dynamics. As the world grapples with the aftermath of a global pandemic, consumer spending patterns have evolved. Luxury goods, including high-end jewelry and polished diamonds, have seen a dip in demand as individuals and households prioritize essentials and experiences over tangible assets.

At the same time, the diamond industry is grappling with an unprecedented surge in the prices of rough diamonds. This surge is attributed to several factors, including disruptions in diamond mining operations due to the pandemic, geopolitical tensions in key diamond-producing regions, and growing demand from emerging economies for luxury goods.

As a show of solidarity, the U.S. was the first to impose sanctions on Russia following the war, which included a ban on the purchase of diamonds with Russian origins. The U.S. diamond and jewelry trade openly discouraged Indian exporters, primarily in the cities of Surat and Mumbai, from continuing business dealings with Russian suppliers.

However, despite these sanctions, diamantaires in Surat and Mumbai persisted in sourcing rough diamonds from Alrosa, the Russian state diamond mining company. Alrosa, which is the world’s second-largest rough diamond supplier after De Beers, annually, conducts rough diamond sales worth an estimated $4.5 billion, with approximately 95% of these goods being destined for Surat and Mumbai.

In an unexpected move, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), a U.S. government agency, recently froze about a dozen fund transfers totaling nearly $26 million. These transfers were linked to multiple offshore firms belonging to diamantaires in Surat and Mumbai, all accused of importing rough diamonds mined in Russia. Notably, the entities directly impacted by these actions were subsidiaries of Indian diamond houses based in the UAE.

The Kiev regime’s branding of SRK as an ‘International War Sponsor’ carries significant implications for the overall export of polished diamonds to the United States. U.S. consumers are known to be sentiment-driven, and the tag assigned by Ukraine to this Indian diamond company is expected to have a substantial impact on exports, particularly in the lead-up to the Christmas festival season.

Diamond industry experts speculate that U.S. citizens, in light of Russia’s actions, are more inclined to support Ukraine, especially when it comes to issues of human rights violations. The power of public sentiment was demonstrated in 2006 when the export of diamonds from India plummeted significantly following the release of the Hollywood film ‘Blood Diamond,’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

As a result of Ukraine’s campaign against the Surat-based diamond company, the diamond industry in Surat and Mumbai is bracing for challenging times ahead.
