Mumbai :  India will commemorate its 77th Independence Day, signifying 76 years of independence on August 15, 2023. As the world’s fifth-largest economy, the theme for this year’s commemoration is “Nation First, Always First.” Many industries have played critical roles in making India a strong nation. The high speed of urbanisation has been a crucial engine of India’s economic development over the last several decades, with metropolitan centres such as Bengaluru, Mumbai, NCR, Pune, and Hyderabad.

As infrastructure has grown, so have the number of fatalities. Fires are one of them. Maharashtra, which provides the most to the country’s GDP, also has the largest incidence of unintentional fires. Maharashtra topped the list with 9,344 instances in the previous five years. Despite this, thanks to the combined efforts of the State Government, Municipal Corporations, and the Fire Department, the numbers have decreased. Maharashtra is developing regulations to prevent and safeguard residents from fires.

According to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, “Maharashtra state has already begun its journey to becoming a leader of the country.” As we celebrate the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Maharashtra Fire Department and Energy Department, as well as the Municipal Corporations of Mumbai and Maharashtra, for all of their efforts to safeguard the safety of our residents. Maharashtra is growing vertically high, and the state government has taken a visionary move to safeguard the safety of citizens and fire fighters by adding a Fire Evacuation Lift for structures 70 metres and beyond. They have our entire support for the development of Maharashtra and its people. It is also surprising how Municipal Corporations are making it tighter for safer living. This is a fantastic method for our heroes, firemen, to reach higher levels with practically little tiredness when fighting fires and rescuing people. The state government has also made certain that a circular has been distributed to all lift manufacturers requiring them to correspond to the Energy Department’s criteria. It is time for the country to be self-sufficient in the face of fire emergencies.”

“The Mumbai Fire Brigade of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation stands as a beacon of firefighting,” remarked Additional Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide. In a city like Mumbai, which is characterised by tall buildings and towers, evacuation is critical during fires. To improve safety in big buildings, the Maharashtra Energy Department requires fire evacuation elevators for constructions taller than 70 metres. This facilitates rapid escape during fires, particularly for vulnerable populations. Firefighter evacuation lifts are also essential for firefighting efficiency. The introduction of the AgniRakshak training programme two years ago, as well as MFB’s civic awareness drive and the installation of fire evacuation elevators in tall buildings, demonstrate Mumbai’s dedication to safety. This Independence Day, let us all vow to prioritise fire safety, adopting evacuation methods as a cornerstone of our city’s resiliency. With unity and knowledge, we can assure a safe and prosperous Mumbai for everyone.”

Along with the CM, fire department officials have sent a warning to Maharashtra residents.

“Throughout the year, we firefighters do our best to ensure the safety of our citizens,” stated R N Ambulgekar, Mumbai’s Chief Fire Officer. Because of the sacrifices made by my colleagues, we have been able to rescue millions of lives during fire situations. I’d want to thank all the firemen that work around the clock like superheroes. For a safer living environment, I ask that all residents follow fire safety and evacuation procedures.”

Girish Zalke, Thane’s Chief Fire Officer, wishes everyone a Happy 76th Independence Day Anniversary. On this distinguished occasion, all individuals living in high-rise buildings are asked to verify the fire protection measures implemented in the building. The building’s staircases should be maintained in good working condition. Information concerning refuge sites should be kept up to date, and electrical equipment in your house should be properly maintained.”

According to Devendra Potphode, Chief Fire Officer of Pune, Maharashtra State strives to manage fire-related situations via effective evacuation procedures, innovative firefighting equipment, and thorough training programmes. The effort focuses on developing a strong structure that incorporates early warning systems, well-defined clear evacuation routes, a sufficient number of stairs, and coordination among essential institutions to protect the safety of residents during fire events. Maharashtra hopes to create a national example by properly handling and minimising fire crises.”

Dr. Vikram Mehta, an industry expert, said, “The Maharashtra State government has done tremendous work in Fire Safety and Evacuation.” The advent of new technology and highly efficient equipment has made fire rescue operations safer. The state government implemented the Fire Evacuation Lift in July 2022 to preserve lives and valuables while also allowing firemen to access upper levels more quickly. I encourage the people of Maharashtra to abide by the rules for a safer way of life. The government establishes severe standards for the protection of its residents, and it is our responsibility to obey those rules and respect those judgements.”
