SMC first in India to use waste disposal land for sports activities in Surat

Surat (Gujarat): There is some good news for sports lovers in the diamond city of Surat. If all goes well, the huge solid waste disposal ground in Khajod will be used for sports activities by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC). Thanks to Municipal Commissioner Shalini Agarwal for deciding to increase the capacity of daily waste removal from 4,200 metric tons to 6,000 metric tons to clear the bio-mining site in a year.

SMC has set the target of removing about 15 lakh metric tons of waste from the Khajod disposal site, which is closed at a stone’s throw distance from the world’s largest Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB), an international diamond exchange, which is part of the Diamond Research and Mercantile (DREAM) City project of the Gujarat Government.

The Khajod disposal site is spread on 8 acres of land. The dumping of solid waste was discontinued by the civic body due to the State Government’s pet project DREAM city and the SDA in Khajod. However, the civic body has ordered the contractors to clear the bio-mining site of the waste within a  year.

Municipal commissioner Shalini Agarwal said, “Once the Khajod disposal site is clear of the waste material, it will be utilised for various sports activities. The spot is going to become an ideal location for sports lovers in the next year”
