Surat: Lack of professional barbers is causing major problems for patients having treatments and operations at Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC)-run SMIMER and Maskati hospitals. Ward boys and safai workers are now in charge of removing undesired hair from patient bodies, which causes discomfort and small damage for the patients.

Medical environments provide training for barbers on the sensitive chore of hair removal without injuring the patients. Their knowledge guarantees effective application of the treatments, therefore preserving the hygienic standards required in medical settings.

Patients scheduled for both minor and major operations, as well as those with wounds, are finding themselves in a difficult position without professional barbers accessible. Crucially important for medical operations, hair removal is being done by unskilled workers, which raises hygienic and safety issues.

Patients and their relatives have complained multiple times about the improvised arrangement. Concerned cousin of a patient Rajesh Vardha expressed his worries, saying, “At least the SMIMER hospital should provide expert barbers for removing hairs. Imagine a ward boy cutting on the patient’s body while removing hairs with razors. The SMC should definitely have barbers help with the hair removal chore.

The Superintendent of SMIMER, Dr. Jitendra Darshan, admitted the problem and said, “A file for the contract renewal of the barbers has been given to the SMC and it is under approval. Professional barbers will be handling hair removal in a short period of time.
