VNSGU Fortifies Campus to Curb Student Misconduct

Surat : The Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) in Surat has bolstered security across its campus, deploying police officers and private security guards in a bid to curb rising misconduct among students. The drastic move comes after multiple complaints about unruly behavior, including brawls, alcohol and drug consumption, vandalism, and inappropriate social media activity. University authorities have sought the assistance of Surat police to administer drug tests to students suspected of engaging in these illicit activities.

The security ramp-up follows a series of troubling incidents involving students misbehaving on campus. Some students have reportedly been creating social media reels while sitting on the bonnets of cars within university grounds, a trend that has raised eyebrows. Adding to the tension, two factions of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) have clashed over the installation of Ganesha idols on campus. Both groups are demanding the right to erect separate Ganesha idols, creating a standoff that has escalated in recent days.

University Takes Action

Kishoresinh Chavda, the vice-chancellor of VNSGU, has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating behavior of some students. Chavda confirmed that the university has submitted multiple applications to the Vesu police, requesting drug tests for students from both ABVP groups. He stated that several students are believed to be consuming alcohol and drugs, which has contributed to the rising number of incidents on campus.

“The university has become a hub for unruly behavior. Students are engaging in acts such as vandalizing CCTVs, consuming illegal substances, and making inappropriate social media reels. We have asked the police to intervene and conduct drug tests on those suspected of being under the influence,” said Chavda.

Four separate applications have been filed by the university with the Vesu police, all calling for immediate action against students found engaging in illegal activities. The administration is particularly concerned about the rising influence of drugs and alcohol on campus and is determined to restore order.

A Tarnished Image

VNSGU has long been a popular destination for students from South Gujarat and other states across India. However, the recent spate of misconduct has severely tarnished the university’s image. For many, this esteemed institution, known for its academic excellence, has become a symbol of disorder and chaos.

“Students, who should be focusing on their studies, are instead damaging the university’s reputation with their behavior. Breaking CCTVs, consuming drugs and alcohol, and openly flouting university rules — this is not what VNSGU stands for,” said a university official who wished to remain anonymous.

The university’s registrar also took a strong stance, writing an official letter to the Vesu Police Inspector asking for immediate drug tests for students. The letter highlighted concerns over banners being put up by one group of ABVP activists, attempting to create an atmosphere of fear around the installation of Ganesha idols.

Vandalism and Social Media Misconduct

The rise in disruptive behavior has alarmed university officials and local residents alike. One of the major concerns is the students’ penchant for creating social media content while breaking rules. Students have been seen making videos while sitting on car bonnets, vandalizing university property, and deliberately damaging surveillance cameras in an attempt to hide their actions.

In one application, VNSGU informed police about students breaking CCTV cameras in the Narmad Smriti Bhavan seminar hall, located within the university’s hostel premises. The university suspects that the students involved were trying to prevent their illicit actions from being caught on camera.

The university’s decision to involve local law enforcement underscores the severity of the situation. The applications submitted to the police aim to not only identify the culprits but also to deter other students from following similar paths.

A Call for Order

As VNSGU grapples with this wave of unrest, it remains committed to restoring peace and discipline on campus. The deployment of police and private security personnel is expected to calm the situation, but the university administration knows that a longer-term solution is needed.

For now, the university’s leadership is focused on bringing the campus back to its roots — a place for learning, not chaos. With the help of law enforcement, VNSGU is determined to address the underlying issues of substance abuse, vandalism, and campus misconduct, aiming to safeguard the university’s future and its reputation as a leading educational institution.
