Viral Video : Stray Pigs Invade Surat International Airport
The presence of stray pigs on the Surat International airport grounds raises the possibility of them venturing onto the tarmac area, a critical zone for landing and departing airplanes.
Surat : A video circulating on social media platforms has caused worry for the Surat International Airport authorities. The footage shows a pack of four stray pigs roaming freely within the airport premises. This incident has highlighted concerns about potential threats posed by these animals to aircraft operations.
The presence of stray pigs on the airport grounds raises the possibility of them venturing onto the tarmac area, a critical zone for landing and departing airplanes. This scenario could have disastrous consequences, as evidenced by a past incident at the Surat airport itself. Many years ago, a stray buffalo collided with an aircraft on the runway, causing significant disruption within the aviation industry.

In response to that incident, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) implemented stricter security measures at the Surat airport. Perimeter walls were constructed, and security personnel were deployed to patrol the compound. Ironically, these measures have proven effective in keeping out human visitors – non-passengers and their relatives are strictly prohibited from entering the airport premises without a valid airline ticket.
However, the current situation exposes a chink in the airport’s security armor. The uninhibited access of stray pigs raises serious questions about the effectiveness of the implemented measures. The video shows the pig family grazing on vegetation and moving freely within the airport grounds, posing a potential threat to aircraft operations.
Airport officials have remained tight-lipped on the issue, refusing to comment on the video or the specific actions being taken to address the situation.
“It is clear that immediate steps are necessary to prevent similar incidents in the future. The safety of passengers and crew must be the top priority, and the AAI needs to take decisive action to ensure a pig-free environment at the Surat International Airport” said Shailesh Patel, a passenger frequently travelling to Sharjah from Surat.
