Surat | Gujarat — Panic and confusion gripped Surat International Airport on Friday morning after a SpiceJet aircraft travelling from Dubai International Airport to Mumbai made an unexpected emergency landing in Surat, leaving dozens of passengers stranded and scrambling to find alternative transport to their destination.

The incident created chaos at the airport as travellers, who were expecting to land in Mumbai, suddenly found themselves in Surat with limited support from the airline.

Flight Diverted Mid-Journey

According to airport officials, the flight was diverted to Surat during its journey from Dubai to Mumbai early Friday morning. Though the aircraft landed safely, the unexpected diversion disrupted travel plans for passengers.

Airport director Anand Sharma confirmed that the flight had been redirected to Surat but said the exact cause behind the diversion was not immediately known.

“The flight was diverted to Surat airport. We do not know the exact reason why it was diverted. The aircraft was travelling from Dubai to Mumbai,” Sharma said.

He added that passengers had to make their own arrangements to continue their journey.

“All the passengers travelled to Mumbai through railway and road transport,” Sharma said.

No SpiceJet Operations in Surat

The situation became more complicated as SpiceJet currently does not operate scheduled services from Surat, meaning the airline has no permanent ground staff or operational facilities at the airport.

“SpiceJet is not operating from Surat airport and the airline has no ground staff or other facility here,” Sharma explained.

Due to this lack of infrastructure, passengers were left waiting for clarity and assistance before eventually leaving the airport through alternative transport options.

Passengers Suspect Technical Issue

Some passengers expressed frustration over the situation and claimed the aircraft may have encountered navigational issues during the flight, forcing the pilot to divert to the nearest available airport.

While there has been no official confirmation from the airline regarding a technical fault, speculation among travellers and airport sources suggests that a possible navigation system malfunction could have prompted the emergency landing as a safety precaution.

Aircraft Still Parked at Airport

As of the latest update, the SpiceJet aircraft remains parked at Surat International Airport while officials await further instructions from the airline.

The incident has once again raised questions about emergency response coordination and passenger support during unscheduled diversions, particularly when airlines do not have operational facilities at smaller airports.

Authorities are expected to seek a detailed explanation from the airline regarding the cause of the diversion in the coming hours.
