Mumbai (Maharashtra): Being a successful entrepreneur in today’s world is a difficult task. Only those with patience, tenacity, self-confidence, and a never-say-die attitude will be able to win the challenge. If you possess all of these characteristics, no social constraints can prevent you from achieving success in the corporate world. Meet Vinay Singh, the Managing Director of ‘The Barrel and Company,’ a rapidly expanding hotel in Mumbai’s Veera Desai Area. His transformation from a farmer’s son to a successful hotelier is inspiring.

Vinay Singh’s patience, self-confidence, and perseverance have helped him make a significant mark in Mumbai’s hotel industry in just six years since The Barrel and Company opened in 2017. Mr. Vinay began his life as the son of a farmer from Uttar Pradesh, but he now has close relationships with many significant personalities, including the Founder and General Secretary of Dhadak Kamgar Union and prominent labour leader Abhijeet Rane.

Let us now read an exclusive interview conducted with Mr Vinay recently.

To begin, Mr. Vinay was asked how he got started in the hotel industry, to which he responded, “My family has no hotel experience. We had a stable and ran a legacy milk business. The government then passed a resolution requiring us to establish our stable in the Pelhar area of Vasai. We then went into the dairy business. I also began working in the real estate industry, where I ran my own business specialising in the purchase and sale of land.”

When asked what inspired him to open a hotel, Mr. Vinay said it all started with a friend who was having a business problem. This land belonged to a friend, and there was a dispute over it. Mr. Vinay was in the land business, so the friend told him, ‘You are a part of my family and close to me.’ Mr. Vinay was then given legal responsibility for the situation by the friend.

The rest of the interview is as follows:

How did you do it without prior experience?

Concerning the experience, this was an opportunity for me, and all I could think about was how to turn it into gold. Everything is new in any field, and I believe that both failure and success are a part of the business. We must continue to work hard in order to reap the benefits of our efforts. When I first started in the hotel business, I had Sandeep Shetty, who had completed a higher education in Hotel Management (MBA). I brought that boy (Sandeep) forward, hired good people, and was successful in business.

What was your family’s role?

Family members were concerned because no one in our family works in the hotel or liquor business. Because I am originally from Uttar Pradesh, many people came to us solely for the milk and dairy business.

Did you face any difficulties during this time?

If you talk about problems, you have to assume that no matter what business you start, you will face difficulties… I had no prior knowledge of the liquor industry. The first problem I solved with Sandeep Shetty’s assistance was determining where to begin. As I gradually and steadily gained direction, the business gained traction.

What would you say about your successful career?

My journey had many ups and downs. My parents were role models for me because I was the son of a farmer. Because each situation is closely monitored, success does not increase pride, and failure does not cause discouragement. The only way out of any situation is to work hard like a farmer’s son.

What do you believe is the key to your hotel’s success?

There are no secrets in the hotel business. In this business, the owner’s team is more important than the owner himself. As I believe that the workers run the entire business, you simply have to trust them and observe how they understand their business and work with passion. I am convinced that the true strength of the company is its employees.

In such a competitive industry, how are you innovating?

This business had no competition at first. However, pubs proliferated in Mumbai. Pubs are becoming more popular as a recreational activity as our children become more educated.

The sources of entertainment are not what they used to be. As more (familiar) people come to us, we don’t have much trouble taking care of them. We have also hired female bouncers to specifically look after our female customers.

What strategy do you employ to ensure customer satisfaction?

Everyone is working hard to expand the company. But we don’t just think about business; we also care about the safety of all visitors to our facility. We do not allow groups of children for this purpose because alcohol affects your character and personality. Furthermore, we only allow customers we know to enter.

Are you happy with your job?

Through this profession, I’ve met many famous people and made new friends and acquaintances. I’ve formed family ties with some amazing people. This profession has given me a lot. I am very pleased with this company.

Many people have contributed to my overall success, especially Abhijeet Rane, the Founder and General Secretary of Dhadak Kamgar Union. He is always by my side, like a younger brother, in my joy and sorrow, and works to provide support. I consider myself fortunate to have Mr. Abhijeet Rane as a friend.

Do you make time for your family?

My family is a true source of strength for me. I try to devote as much time as I can to them. Because my family is aware of the nature of my business, they never bother me with anything.

Are you involved in any other social organisations besides your business?

While we are living in society, I try to assist any needy individual who comes to me with the belief that we must contribute to society. My brother runs a non-profit organisation. Even during the pandemic, we provided an enormous amount of food to the poor.

I am also closely associated with Dhadak Kamgar Union through Mr. Abhijeet Rane and am very pleased with the work that they are doing to serve society as well as the poor and needy.

What message do you want to send to aspiring and aspiring entrepreneurs?

Make a lot of jobs. Do something that will employ four people instead of just one. Treat people well, make their hearts happy, and don’t curse anyone. You will rise. Winning people is a more difficult task than starting a company worth a few crores. Even if the goal is to support one’s family while also helping two others support theirs, it can be sufficient. @experiencebarrel
