Vadilal and other Ice Cream Brands in Surat Fail Quality Tests, Raising Health Concerns
A recent raid by the Surat Municipal Corporation's (SMC) food department has revealed that popular ice cream brands, including Vadilal, may be putting your health at risk
SURAT, GUJARAT : Citizens of Surat beware! A recent raid by the Surat Municipal Corporation’s (SMC) food department has revealed that popular ice cream brands, including Vadilal, may be putting your health at risk.
Tests conducted by the Public Health Laboratory in Surat found that samples from 10 prominent ice cream parlours across the city contained less than 10% milk fat and less than 36% solid content, falling below the minimum standards set for ice cream. This raises concerns about potential health hazards associated with consuming these products.
“These sub-standard ice creams could lead to an increase in bad cholesterol levels and even heart attacks,” said a food department officer for the SMC, highlighting the seriousness of the issue.
The raids, conducted on April 30th, targeted well-known parlours such as Santkrupa Natural Kothi, Madhav, Chandamam, Prime’s Natural, Radhe, Umiya Agency, Vadilal Enterprises Limited, and Bombay Super. Following the test results, the SMC seized and destroyed approximately 86 kilograms of the substandard ice cream.
The department officials pointed out that consumers often prioritize taste and brand recognition over the actual ingredients used in commercially produced ice cream. “Many people are simply unaware of the importance of factors like milk fat and milk solids content in ice cream,” the officer explained.
With summer approaching and ice cream consumption expected to rise significantly, citizens are urged to be cautious. Here are some tips for making informed choices:
Check labels: Look for ice cream with a minimum of 10% milk fat and 36% solid content.
Choose reputable brands: Opt for parlours known for using high-quality ingredients.
Consider alternatives: Explore healthier frozen treats like homemade yogurt parfaits or fruit popsicles.
By taking these steps, Surat residents can enjoy their favorite summer treat without compromising their health.
