New Delhi:   For the third year in a row, a record number of Indian students travelled to the United States to seek higher education. The latest Open Doors Report (ODR) shows that the number of Indian students studying in the United States reached a record high of 268,923 in the 2022–23 academic year, a rise of 35% from the previous year.  More than a quarter of the over a million international students in the United States are from India.  International Education Week (IEW) is a global celebration of the value of international education and exchange, and it officially kicks off with the publishing of the Open Doors Report.

Data from the Open Doors Report shows that, for the first time since 2009/2010, overseas graduate students from India have outnumbered those from China in the United States.  Graduate enrollment in India climbed by 63% to 165,936 students, a rise of approximately 64,000 students, while undergraduate enrollment in India increased by 16%. According to the ODR, India also has the highest number of people who applied for and received temporary work authorization for the purpose of completing optional practical training (OPT) (69,062).

U.S. Ambassador Eric Garcetti remarked: “You did it, India!  Each and every Indian student in the United States and the families supporting their success deserve recognition for this achievement.  The decision to study abroad, and your choice of the United States, represents a valuable investment by you and your families.  You are bringing our countries closer together and leading us towards a bright future.  We celebrate the strength of the Indian educational system that prepares students to compete globally and look forward to seeing India continue to lead.  We also look forward to balancing these record numbers.  We want to see equal numbers of women pursuing studies in the United States and see more U.S. students coming to experience all that India has to offer.”
