Ajay Handa’s journey from a black-and-white bar in Hubli to building Hotelwaley, India’s first vernacular microlearning platform for frontline hospitality staff, is a story about what happens when a founder refuses to wait for permission.

Hubli, Karnataka: In the mid-1990s, a young entrepreneur in Hubli faced a challenge that could have derailed his plans. He was building a bar inside his family’s property, The Hans Hotel, but the budget ran out before he could hire a professional bartender. Most people would have delayed the launch. Ajay Handa chose a different path.

Determined to find a solution, he drove nearly 400 kilometres to Bangalore and spent days observing bartenders at the iconic Pub on Brigade Road. He watched every technique, every interaction, and every detail behind the counter. Armed with practical knowledge rather than formal training, he returned to Hubli, trained two local youngsters, and launched The Zebra Crossing – widely regarded as North Karnataka’s first youth nightlife venue.

Built using a home stereo system, borrowed music collections, promotional posters distributed across college campuses, and leftover black-and-white tiles transformed into a striking interior design, Zebra Crossing quickly became a local sensation. The venue attracted crowds from across the region and demonstrated a lesson that would define Handa’s entrepreneurial journey for decades to come: when a gap exists, resourcefulness often matters more than resources.

That same philosophy eventually led to the creation of Hotelwaley.

After spending years in and around India’s hospitality industry, Handa recognised a problem that had largely gone unnoticed. India’s hospitality sector employs more than 40 million people across approximately 4.2 million establishments, yet millions of frontline workers in housekeeping, food and beverage service, front office operations, and guest relations have never had access to structured, affordable, job-ready training in their preferred language.

Most available hospitality training programs are designed for premium hotel chains, delivered primarily in English, and remain inaccessible to workers in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. The result is a significant skills gap affecting service quality, compliance, employee retention, and career progression.

To address this challenge, Handa founded Devo Edutech Pvt Ltd in 2022 and began developing Hotelwaley, a platform specifically designed for India’s frontline hospitality workforce.

Hotelwaley is positioned as India’s first vernacular microlearning platform built exclusively for hospitality workers. The platform delivers mobile-first training modules ranging from 60 seconds to five minutes, allowing employees to learn practical skills between shifts rather than attending lengthy classroom sessions.

The curriculum covers critical operational areas including front office management, housekeeping standards, food safety, food and beverage service, fire safety, and first aid. Content is designed to align with industry-recognised standards including FoSTaC, NSDC, and THSC frameworks.

The platform will initially launch in English, Hindi, and Kannada, with Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, and Malayalam planned for future phases. This multilingual approach aims to bridge one of the industry’s most persistent barriers: accessibility.

The innovation and market potential behind the initiative have already received significant recognition. In 2023, Devo Edutech and Hotelwaley were selected as winners of the Startup Karnataka Elevate Programme, one of Karnataka’s most competitive startup initiatives. The company received a grant of ₹18 lakh in recognition of its vision and potential impact.

Industry research conducted by the company also revealed a major market opportunity. Global hospitality education providers such as Cornell University, AHLEI, and Typsy primarily cater to institutional learners and large hospitality organisations, leaving a substantial gap in the vernacular, mobile-first training segment for India’s independent hospitality workforce.

Hotelwaley’s beta launch is scheduled for August 2026, followed by a nationwide rollout in October 2026. The company is also actively exploring partnerships with hospitality associations, skilling organisations, and industry stakeholders to expand its reach across the country.

For Handa, however, the mission extends beyond technology.

His goal is to create meaningful opportunities for millions of hospitality workers who have traditionally been excluded from formal learning systems. By making training accessible, practical, and available in local languages, Hotelwaley aims to help workers improve their skills, advance their careers, and contribute to higher service standards across India’s rapidly growing hospitality sector.

From teaching himself bartending to launching a platform designed to train millions, Ajay Handa’s story reflects the power of identifying overlooked problems and building solutions from lived experience. What began with a road trip to Bangalore and a bar built from leftover tiles has evolved into a mission to transform hospitality skills for Bharat.
