Surat’s government employment exchange lacks information on locals employed in Hazira’s giant industries: RTI

Surat (Gujarat) [India], March 16: At a time when the multi-national companies operating in the industrial belt of Hazira promise employment to the residents in the employment fairs, the State Government’s employment exchange is devoid of information on the locals employed in the giant industries in Hazira.

This has been revealed by the Surat Employment office in the Right to Information (RTI) filed by farmers’ and co-operative sector leader, Darshan Naik on Wednesday.

In his RTI application, Naik sought information on the number of locals from Surat and Hazira employed in the private and public sector industries including GAIL, ONGC, Kribhco, NTPC, Reliance Industries Limited, Essar, Adani, GSEG, etc. located in Hazira.

As per the Gujarat Government’s resolution on March 31, 1995, the minimum 85% of recruitments to the posts in the cadres of employees, workers, and artisans and minimum 60% recruitment to managerial and supervisory posts in all the undertakings of the State Government as well as the industries being provided with incentives by the State Government situated to the State, should be made from among the local residents. Accordingly, minimum 85% and 60% recruitment respectively be made in non-incentive industries and the public sectors of the Central Government.

Talking with TBT, Darshan Naik, a farmers’ and co-operative leader said, “It is a pity on the part of the employment office of the State Government for not having the information on the recruitment of local residents in the giant private and public sector industries in Hazira. This is even though the Gujarat Government-issued resolution in 1995 for recruiting the local residents in the industries”

Naik added, “It seems there is no control of the government officers on the multi-national companies operating in Hazira. The educated youths in Hazira are not getting employment in the industries and they have to take up petty jobs in private companies or start their own business. It is my humble request to the State Government to strictly implement its resolution passed in 1995”
