Surat Wins Best Urban Local Body Award in Water conservation

Surat : After Surat city topped the list of the cleanest cities in the country last year and the bagging the top spot in the Swachh Vayu Survekshan 2024 (National Clean Air City)  conducted by the Union Environment Ministry last month, the diamond city has been awarded as the bestd urban local body for ‘Tertiary Treatment Plant Conservation of Natural Resource and Making System Self Sustainable to Sale of Treated Waste Water’ at the fifth National Water Award 2023 announced by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, department of water resources, river development and Ganga rejuvenation. 

Known as the diamond city, the textile hub, Surat is shining with national and international level achievements. With the announcement of the winners of the National Water Award-2023, the city of Surat has been declared number one in the country for doing exemplary work related to water including tertiary treatment. Mayor Daxesh Mavani and Surat Municipal Commissioner Shalini Aggarwal will be awarded the trophy, prize money by President Draupadi Murmu on October 22.

Surat Municipal Commissioner Shalini Agarwal said that by providing approximately 115 MLD water to the industry by purifying the waste water through the tertiary treatment plant, it generates an income of Rs.141 crores a year. Various achievements of service level benchmarks have been achieved by the municipal corporation in the water supply and drainage sector. About 414 recharge borewells in various public properties and approximately 4,150 recharge borewells in private properties have been constructed for the maintenance of underground water level. The corporation has done work related to environment preservation through tree plantation. Various public awareness programs related to environment preservation from rain water recharge and tree plantation have been done

In Swachh Survekshan 2023, Surat ranked first in cleanliness. The message of Green Surat Clean Surat was spread throughout Surat city by Surat Municipal Corporation to make Surat city smart and clean. As a result, Surat city got the first rank in cleanliness. If we talk about the last three years, Surat was ranked second in cleanliness. Last year, Surat managed to get the first rank title by scoring 221 marks. 

The city of Surat has made the state proud by bagging the first rank in the Clean Air Survey 2024 of the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, beating 131 cities across the country. Surat, which came first with a score of 194 out of 200, was ranked 13th in the survey last year.
