Surat : A devastating fire broke out on Tuesday morning at Nandini Sarees, a prominent saree showroom located in the historic Old Bombay Market area of Umarwada, Surat. The incident prompted a swift response from the Surat Municipal Corporation’s (SMC) fire and emergency department, with around eight to ten fire tenders dispatched to the scene to combat the fierce blaze.

The fire department was alerted to the emergency following reports of a sudden fire outbreak at the Old Bombay Market. As the flames raged within the Nandini Sarees store, panic and concern gripped the neighboring shopkeepers. Responding promptly, a team of five fire tenders rushed to the location, deploying continuous water cannons to gain control over the inferno that had engulfed the closed shop.

According to fire officials, the fire initially erupted on the ground floor of the saree shop but was successfully contained before it could spread to neighboring establishments. Of particular concern was the basement of the shop, which housed a substantial stock of highly flammable polyester materials. Firefighters continued to employ water cannons to prevent the fire from reaching this volatile storage area.

Krishna Modh, a Fire Officer, provided details on the incident, explaining that the fire had originated on the ground floor and subsequently spread to the second floor of the showroom. The presence of a significant quantity of sarees within the shop fueled the rapid progression of the blaze. It took more than two arduous hours for the diligent efforts of over 25 personnel from eight to ten fire stations to bring the raging fire under control.

The intensity of the fire resulted in substantial damage, with chania-cholis, dresses, women’s clothing, furniture, and electrical wires succumbing to the flames. Additionally, the structural integrity of the building was compromised, further adding to the losses incurred by the fire.

In the aftermath of the incident, the shop owner expressed dissatisfaction with the response time of the fire department, alleging that they arrived late to the scene. This accusation is expected to be thoroughly investigated by the authorities as they conduct a comprehensive assessment of the fire and the emergency response.
