Surat : Roadside Firecracker Sales Pose Grave Threat to Public Safety
However, the SMC and police administration are now under intense scrutiny for overlooking the roadside sale of potentially dangerous firecrackers. These vendors often disregard essential fire safety protocols, raising substantial concerns regarding public safety.
Surat : The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) and the police department are facing increased scrutiny and criticism after a significant fire incident occurred at a roadside firecracker stall near Star Bazaar in Adajan. The blaze, which erupted due to undisclosed reasons, prompted the swift response of fire tenders from the Adajan station, successfully extinguishing the flames with water cannons. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the incident.
However, the SMC and police administration are now under intense scrutiny for overlooking the roadside sale of potentially dangerous firecrackers. These vendors often disregard essential fire safety protocols, raising substantial concerns regarding public safety.
The widespread presence of firecracker vendors lining the main roads across various vital areas in the city such as Adajan, Pal, Rander, Bhagal, Vesu, Parle Point, Udhana, and Dindoli poses a severe threat to the safety of countless commuters and pedestrians. These vendors openly display hazardous fireworks on the roads, operating without adhering to any fire safety norms, thereby risking the lives of the general public.
Although legitimate firecracker stall owners are required to obtain permission from both the police and their respective municipal zones within the Surat Municipal Corporation, no such regulatory process exists for the roadside vendors. This lack of oversight and regulation allows unlicensed vendors to engage in selling firecrackers, thereby compromising public safety.
Basant Pareek, the chief fire officer of SMC, emphasized that permissions to sell firecrackers are granted by specific municipal zones. However, vendors conducting sales on the roads are engaging in unlawful activities, posing a significant risk to the lives of many. This peril became evident during the recent fire outbreak at the firecracker stall near Star Bazaar.
Reports indicate that these roadside vendors persist despite efforts by municipal teams and the police to remove them from the roads, highlighting the challenging and uncontrollable nature of this issue.
Selling fireworks on the roadside without adhering to safety measures is a critical hazard, as it endangers public safety and has the potential to cause major accidents and calamities.
