SURAT : What began as a desperate attempt to end a life on the banks of the Tapi River has ended as a remarkable story of rescue, justice and reconciliation. In a case that exposed the dangerous consequences of online exploitation, the Surat Police not only saved a distressed woman from suicide but also tracked down her alleged blackmailer across state borders and helped restore trust within her family.

The incident came to light nearly a month ago when the Amroli Police received urgent information that a woman in her thirties was planning to take her own life. Without wasting a moment, police teams rushed to her residence. When she could not be found there, officers expanded their search and located her sitting alone near the Tapi River, visibly distressed and on the verge of taking an irreversible step.

Police intervened in time and safely brought her to the police station for counselling and questioning. During the interaction, the woman revealed that she had been facing severe domestic violence and emotional trauma.

“As soon as we received the alert, our officers responded immediately and succeeded in saving her life,” said DCP Zone-5 Lakhadhirsinh Zala. “However, during the inquiry, we discovered that the root cause of her distress was a serious cybercrime.”

According to investigators, the woman had become acquainted with a man through Instagram. The accused allegedly gained her trust, obtained a private nude video and then began blackmailing her. He reportedly threatened to circulate the footage online and eventually sent it to her husband, creating suspicion and conflict within the family.

Believing the manipulated narrative, the husband allegedly began doubting his wife, leading to repeated arguments and physical abuse. The emotional burden eventually pushed the woman to the brink.

Realising she was a victim of cyber extortion, Surat Police launched a multi-state operation to track down the accused. Investigators first traced him to Bihar before learning he had fled to Chhattisgarh. Using technical surveillance and local intelligence, police identified the suspect as Arjun alias Montu Upadhyay and arrested him from Telbandha village in Chhattisgarh.

“The accused frequently moved across states for work, making the operation challenging. Our team gathered intelligence discreetly and successfully apprehended him,” DCP Zala said.

The accused has been booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act and is currently in judicial custody.

In a rare move, police also counselled the husband, explaining how his wife had fallen victim to a digital trap. After understanding the facts, he accepted her innocence and reconciled with her.

The case highlights the growing threat of online blackmail while showcasing how timely police intervention can save lives, bring offenders to justice and rebuild shattered families.
