Surat : Surat is a fast-growing city in the Indian state of Gujarat. With a population of about 6 million people, it is Gujarat’s second-largest metropolis after Ahmedabad. The city is a major textile and diamond manufacturing centre, contributing considerably to the state’s economy. As the city grows, there is an urgent need for expanded railway infrastructure to meet rising transportation demand.

Surat is now administered by the Western Railway (WR) division, which is based in Mumbai. However, owing to the absence of a defined division and a Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), the city has faced considerable obstacles. The lack of a DRM has made addressing the unique difficulties confronting Surat difficult, resulting in delayed projects and insufficient attention to the city’s railway infrastructure.

A separate division under the WR headquarters in Mumbai has long been requested by numerous parties in Surat. This would increase connection and minimise traffic congestion on the highways, adding to the city’s general growth.

The division will provide the city with the infrastructure and administration it needs to keep up with its expansion and development.
