Surat : The Surat police are investigating a baffling robbery case after the accountant of Sahajanand Technology Private Limited, a global leader in diamond manufacturing technology solutions, lodged a complaint. The accountant reported that a masked robber, posing as an Income Tax officer, looted four company employees carrying cash worth Rs 1.04 crore.

The incident occurred when the employees collected cash from the Katargam Safe deposit vault and were travelling in a Maruti Eco car towards the Mahidharpura safe deposit vault for further deposit. According to sources, near the Katargam Balashram, a masked man wearing a cap approached the car and requested a lift. After entering the vehicle, the man revealed a gun, took the employees hostage, and drove away towards Jahangirpura.

Police sources said that the employees were travelling with cash to the tune of Rs 8 crore. However, the company later lodged the complaint mentioning the loot of Rs 1 crore cash.

The robbery has raised several questions for the investigating authorities. The employees were released unharmed, but they did not raise any alarms during the ordeal. Additionally, the police are questioning why the employees stopped the car despite carrying a large sum of cash, and why the two employees who were dropped off midway did not seek help immediately. Furthermore, the lack of a high-definition GPS system in the vehicle transporting such a significant amount of cash has raised concerns about the company’s security protocols.

The Surat police have registered a complaint under sections 392 (robbery), 365 (kidnapping or abducting with intent to secretly and wrongfully confine person), 170 (pretending to be a public servant) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and section 135 (liability for harbouring or concealing an offender) of the Gujarat Police Act (GP Act) against the unidentified culprit. The investigation is ongoing as the police attempt to apprehend the suspect and recover the stolen money.

“We have gathered key evidences from the 300 CCTV cameras checked by the investigating team members. We will reveal the entire case and nab the main accused involved in the robbery case” said a senior police officer.
