Surat: Hundreds of migrant security guards hired with forged Aadhar and PAN
Recent arrests of four miscreants in the Pandesara area, who were selling counterfeit documents to migrant workers for a sum of Rs 5,000, have shed light on the magnitude of the issue. As hundreds of migrant workers are employed as security guards in residential and commercial buildings, residential societies, and important government and private institutions, the potential risk they pose to society is a matter of serious concern.
Surat : Surat, the economic capital of Gujarat, is a bustling city known for its thriving diamond and textile industries and a large influx of migrant workers seeking employment opportunities. However, the city’s law and order situation have become increasingly challenging for the Surat Police due to the rise in cases involving fake Aadhar cards, PAN cards, and educational certificates.
The Fake Document Racket Uncovered
The recent police raid on a small rented shop named ‘Solar Point’ located at Piyush Point in Pandesara revealed the alarming extent of the fake document racket. The miscreants involved in the operation were found to possess 160 blank Aadhar cards, 34 marksheets, token receipts of EWS housing flats allotted by the Surat Municipal Corporation, blank PAN cards, and registration certificates of vehicles, among other incriminating evidence. The discovery of such a vast cache of fake documents has raised questions about how long these illegal activities had been going on and the extent of the impact on those using these forged papers to secure employment and other benefits.
The Role of Migrant Workers
Surat’s status as an economic hub attracts numerous migrant workers from different parts of the country, drawn by the promise of livelihood and a better life. Unfortunately, some individuals take advantage of this situation by selling fake documents to unsuspecting migrants looking to establish themselves in the city. These counterfeit documents can then be used to secure jobs as security guards, drivers, domestic help, and other positions in public and private sectors. The potential for individuals with fabricated credentials to infiltrate key roles raises significant concerns about public safety and security.
Miscreants with Government-approved Backgrounds
Startlingly, the miscreants involved in this fake document racket were found to have previously worked at a government-approved Aadhar Kendra. However, due to their involvement in illegal activities, they were eventually dismissed from their positions. Instead of reforming, they saw an opportunity to profit illicitly by operating a center to produce and distribute counterfeit documents. The fact that criminals with such backgrounds can manipulate the system and continue their illicit activities highlights the need for more robust oversight and measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Daunting Challenge for Surat Police
The arrest of the four miscreants has created an uphill task for the Surat Police. Identifying all individuals who obtained employment or other services using fake documents will require extensive investigations and background checks. The presence of such individuals as security guards in residential and commercial complexes, drivers, and bank employees poses a significant risk to public safety. The police must ascertain the authenticity of the documents used by these individuals and assess their potential criminal backgrounds to safeguard the city and its residents.
Darhsan Naik, social activist said, “The proliferation of fake documents in Surat has become a pressing concern for the city’s law enforcement agencies. With hundreds of migrant workers employed in critical positions such as security guards and drivers, the potential risks are immense”
Naik added, “The recent arrest of miscreants involved in the counterfeit document racket has brought this issue to the forefront. The Surat Police must now intensify their efforts to identify and investigate all individuals who might have obtained jobs or other services through fraudulent means.”
