Surat : In a shocking development, the headmaster of a Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC)-run school in Piplod has been suspended for his arbitrary expulsion of 46 students over minor issues. The State Education Department, taking serious note of the situation, has also issued show-cause notices to three members of the Cluster Resource Centre (CRC) for their lack of oversight.

The headmaster, Vijay Jhanjrukia, of Nagar Prathamik Shikshan Samiti’s school number 318 in Surat, has been under scrutiny since June 2024, when he began issuing leaving certificates (LCs) to students for trivial mistakes. This action, which affected 46 students, has drawn widespread condemnation from parents, educators, and state officials alike.

The gravity of the situation prompted State Education Minister Praful Panseria to intervene personally. Terming the incident as “shameful,” Minister Panseria ordered the immediate suspension of Jhanjrukia and initiated a thorough investigation into the matter. A special committee has been formed to delve into the circumstances surrounding the expulsions, and further disciplinary actions are anticipated.

An Educational Crisis

The issuance of LCs to students for minor infractions just days before their exams has sparked outrage within the educational community. The situation has been described as creating an “earthquake-like” impact, shaking the very foundations of educational integrity in the region. There are concerns that the number of affected students could rise as the investigation progresses.

The headmaster’s suspension comes with strict conditions: Jhanjrukia has been barred from leaving Surat without official permission, ensuring his availability for ongoing investigations. The possibility of his permanent dismissal from the post looms large, depending on the findings of the committee.

Minister’s Response

Minister Panseria, addressing the situation, emphasized the seriousness of the headmaster’s actions. “No teacher or principal has the right to expel students over minor issues. It is their responsibility to ensure that children remain in school, not to push them out,” he stated. He further highlighted that such actions are contrary to the fundamental principles of education, and assured that the committee’s findings would dictate the final actions against Jhanjrukia.

In addition to the headmaster’s suspension, three CRC members have been issued show-cause notices for their failure to attend to the situation earlier. Their roles in this debacle are under review, with potential disciplinary actions pending the investigation’s outcome.
