Surat |  Gujarat — A tragic industrial accident struck the Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel (AMNS) plant in Hazira near Surat, when a crane collapsed at the coke oven project site, leaving one worker dead and three others injured on Monday morning. The incident has triggered shockwaves among workers and raised serious questions about workplace safety.

The deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Vinod Paswan, an employee of ITD Cementation India Limited, the contractor managing the project site. Three other workers sustained injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are reported to be stable.

“We ran to save ourselves, but some were crushed”

Recounting the horrific moment, fellow worker Alamgir Shah said, “We had just started our work after completing the safety process when we heard a loud noise. Some workers ran for cover, while others ran toward the sound. Those who went there were crushed under the falling crane tower. Four people from our group were caught in the collapse—one died and others were injured.”

AMNS expresses grief, vows support

Confirming the incident, a spokesperson for AM/NS India issued a statement. “We are deeply grieved and saddened to report a tragic loss of life at our coke oven project site being operated by our contractor ITD Cementation India Limited. A tower crane collapsed, leading to the death of one employee and injuries to three others. All injured workers are recovering in hospital and are stable. Our deepest condolences are with the family during this devastating time. We are cooperating fully with authorities and extending all support.”

Allegations of negligence

Workers at the site alleged possible operator error and negligence. According to one worker, the crane had already been stuck in the tower the previous day but no corrective action was taken.

“The operator should have informed us when the crane was stuck. Instead, we were told to go ahead with our work. Moments later, the entire crane tower collapsed,” said a worker at the site.

Investigation underway

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the AMNS Hazira accident. While the company has pledged cooperation, workers are demanding accountability and stronger safety measures to prevent such tragedies.
